Whoa! scary stuff. I had a post lift on an older battery in my Dad's ranger once. Cranking was weak so I replaced it for that reason. Never considered the possibility of an internal short. Thanks for posting this.

So... time to move the batteries to a less flammable location, like mounted to the frame rail behind the cab? Where there's far less flammable stuff close by to ignite?

As an added benefit, batteries there would give you more room up front for intercooler/turbo piping!
I'm thinking about building a battery box under the bed, behind the starter. Good idea, I'm definitely going to go about the rebuild in a proactive manner.

My battery guy is picking up the battery tomorrow. I spoke with him on Friday and the manufacturer will be involved in a possible insurance claim.

Dang. Sorry to hear about your truck.

Hope it's not too much work to get the manufacturer to help you out and make it right.

This was a walmart battery. Did the same thing outside my parts store while i was working. Unfortunatley didnt catch it in time like you. I had it out with a garden hose before the fire department got there, as we used up 2 extinguishers but it burned back into the dash, And started into the seats...:dunno The owner was pretty upset....but what do you do....

Glad you and your truck are ok! Just figured id share

Had a battery melt down in my RV once. Was driving along and the starter wire insulation melted on the exhaust manifold and the wire shorted across as best as I can tell. Lost all electrical power and the engine died. Pulled to the side of the road and saw smoke coming from the battery hutch under the step. Opened it up and one of the terminals had completely melted down into the battery.

Should also mention I had a grocery bag full of ammunition sitting next to the hutch. :Thumbs Up Almost had me a firework show.
