Now that I'm on my computer(vs my phone), this is just plain retarded timing due to IP/injector wear.

The 'right' thing do do is replace both.

The 'workaround' is to just advance the IP a good 1/16"-1/8" and hope it's enough. Last time I had smoke issues on an IP, I basically had to crank it all the way as far as I could towards the passenger's side to get enough advance out of it.

I've also "skipped" the IP gear a tooth forward(clockwise) compared to the cam gear that drives it, which gives about 6 degrees of advance.

Ok, thanks! I was a bit worried. Anyone on the forum rebuild the IP?

Typ4 (Russ) and Agnem (Mel). Both do a good job and are recommended by members here. I'm not sure about Russ, but since Mel runs Conestoga Diesel, he should have some ready to go.

I had a lot of white smoke when I bough my 1990 7.3l f250 4x4. I would follow 79jasper advice because white smoke in the morning hard to start stumble all because of lack of fuel. A good Diesels engine will start even if the glow plugs don't work. Mine was a fuel pump problem. It caused it to stumble and smoke because it was not getting enough fuel. When your checking the truck in the morning see if fuel is being delivered on first crank if air is there then the return line could be leaking = long start because it also drained injection pump (IP) to. I have another problem with mine and it is in my return line to Tanks it leaks fuel back into tank because the rubber end separate's after 27 years of use. So when its time I will be replacing the pick up tubes and rubber caps and cleaning up both tanks. I hope you figure it out and Good luck.

Macrobb, the only reason I didn't mention Justin is because he asked about forum members. Yes. Justin is also a good place to buy pumps and injectors.
