I want to know what the best gear oil is for my 1990 swr. It' not bad looking but figured with winter here I better change it out anyways. So what kind do you guys use? I was thinking synthetic.

My preference is usually conventional unless manufacture says otherwise. In saying that I just put a superduty rear end under my truck out of a 2001 that DOES call for 75/140 synthetic so that kinda threw a wrench in my plans. There is a thread already on this topic actually were u can get a better idea of what would work better for u

I have only put one type of additive in for the limited slip.

Personally I plan on using 75w-140 in my F350. Open diff so no additives. I want the synthetic soley because of the lower cold viscosity. We don't get SUPER cold up here, but a few months out of the year sub zero temps are common overnight.

I will NEVER use Walmart/supertech gear oil again. They got caught with their pants down at one point with oil that wasn't as spec'd. I still blame the axle that blew apart on their oil.

standard 80w90 , no issues ever. change it every 50,000 miles/80,000km . a friction modifier fro your posi/limited slip, but add it every time you change the oil!

don't swap regular for synthetics unless you are pulling the hubs and doing a good flush in the carrier.

If you want the Best lubricant use Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-140. Yes in a perfect world it would be nice to start with everything clean with no residue lubricant. But even if you just change the gear lube you are FAR Ahead of anything else. Less Friction, Less Wear and better fuel mileage. All lubes Will mix with each other because they have to be compatible to mix with any previous residual lubricant left behind after the change. Same goes for Oil, Trans fluid and gear lube.

I used mobil1 synthetic 80W-90 when I did my front and rear. I would have preferred amsoil or redline but I'm not towing any super heavy currently. Just trailer with building materials.
