Not to get way off topic, but @towcat have you driven a 4.30 ratio? Don't think it was ever a factory option, but you can get gear sets in it. Just asking out of curiosity.

Forgive me for making some assumptions, but I assume being based in California your speed isn't much of a concern given anything towing is limited to 55 (but that happens how often?). And again I assume that if you're using that low of a ratio then the vehicle with it is designed for heavy loads and again speed isn't much of a concern. I go through all that essentially to ask, have you ever needed/wanted an extra gear with your 4.56 and numerically higher ratios? I tow heavy occasionally (~6 times a year, 10k+ trailer weights) and like you've said found my 4.10s wanting.

Apologies to @Sidewinded_idi for taking your hitch off topic. The heavy haul conversation got me, and I wanted to ask.

for me, I keep my hauling speeds to 65 mph max outside of kali and 60 in kali. I've cleaned up enough towing disasters to where I have no desire to be yet another excessive speed statistic. it takes me about three years of full time hauling to go through a set of brakes, so that should tell you how much I like my gearing.

Just a comment on the gearing I've got 4.56 gears in mine and towing is a dream. Screams once I'm over 55-60 but I don't use the fast lanes anyway lol.

here's some photos of the mounting. with fiver plate and without. I could have removed the rest of the uprights, but they would mean more things to put away and they weren't in my way.

I have the same style of rails, though the 5th wheel I can't leave in with the gooseneck plate like yours. Slightly different hitch, but the built one of @Sidewinded_idi is more along my like of overbuilt and hell for stout.

@towcat is that an old ARGO on your deck?

For a goose plate I welded 2 plates [5/16"?] together with four interlocked welded tabs for the rail pins. Using the plate keeps the ball low and under the 5th wheel hitch like others above.
As for gearing, in my 87 it has 4.56 r&p and towed anything I ever put behind it, just as good as my 05 when stock. The Gearvendor O/D helped out on the highway since it has a 3 spd C-6.
