Fuel filler neck woes need ideas

I've thought of making mine point up from the bed and having a fuel door. I guess be real inconvenient if had a load on top of it. Lol
But would for sure help with fuelling.

I have seen this in action! Dude had doors to cover fill caps. And had a load of square bales on. Pry 30 or so. And had to fuel up. I laughed

Could block up the entire flatbed for a more favorable angle. If you want a super tall flatbed that is

Usually fills pretty good. But I do have the better vent system. Lol

Just a thought, consider putting tank behind seat like the old Highboys, filler neck in cab??? If you find one in a salvage yard they're usually in great condition because they've always been protected by the interior cab mount situation, never exposed to road salt. I have a 74 F250 with flat-dump bed and the tank still looks new.

Here is my .02 on this. The tube from the filler needs to be gradually down hill the whole way. If I were you I would do a reinforced notch in the bed sub frame to allow the tube to stay on grade. Then do the filler neck mods. Maybe use a tapered block to help the angle while you are filling. If still not acceptable then lets talk about all these other wild ideas. This is not new territory. Shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel.

I bought my 86 F350 earlier this year and it was an absolute Nightmare to fill up. The owner I bought it from gave me a 'drive up ramp' for changing trailer tires and said: "you'll see what this is for when you need to put diesel in it". Needless to say my wife refused to be with me if there was even a chance I might have to fill it up in town, lol. I didn't really want to go through the bed of the truck but now I kind of like it. I can't go full speed on the fuel pump handle, but this is 1000% better than it was. Plus I no longer have to carry a catch pan with me everywhere I go. My 86 doesn't have the external 'vent tube' on the filler neck so I just rotated them around to where they were facing up.

I like that design Jason. Im going to give it a shot but im going to try positioning the door closer to the edge of the bed.

Does anyone know if there are any issues with diesel and galvanized steel?

I'm not sure how close the properties are, but the guy I bought my truck from was using aluminized exhaust pipe to extend the filler neck to the side of the flatbed. It was his daily driver for 4 years and when I removed them they still looked in great condition. Nothing was eaten away or looked like it had reacted with the diesel. But of course that was aluminized, not galvanized. Hope that helps some.

Well that's good to know. I have some boron steel plates and tubing that I could use to fabricate, not only a better filler neck but also an expansion tank to ease the vacuum pressure in the fill system.

I was always told that galvanizing and diesel do not mix. The diesel will pick up some of the zinc from the galvanizing and carry it in solution. That zinc then ends up in the small orifices in the IP and injectors and creates problems.

Why not have the filler tube adapt directly to the square up pipe, put a cap at the top of the square tubing and use the actual inside of the vertical square tubing as your fill tube

square pipe is pretty rusty inside and I really cant get into it to clean it out

I also read that, however I understood it as being an issue specifically with the sulfur that was present in large quantities in old diesel.

I hit the plates that I used to fab up my prefill tank with an XRF gun and they are actually aluminized rather than galvanized. Didn't pick up any zinc at all so I think I'll be ok with the material I have. Good thing, since I already welded up the tank.

Not to change the subject, but does your 94 have the 'wide mouth' filler neck? I discovered not to long ago that truck stop type fuel handles won't fit in my 86. (Trying to hold back a high flow diesel pump form wanting to go wide open can be quite the task, lol)
I was just trying to figure out when Ford made that change. In both of my past super duty's I could use the larger style pump handles.
