Hey guys,
So I have a 1966 f250 which I've successfully transplanted a 87 6.9 into. I've got it wired up and runs. The problem I'm having is the glow plugs. I've wired up a momentary switch as per diagrams I've seen on here and other forums. The problem is that my wire to the switch just gets so hot it melts in seconds. Since this is a swap, I obviously don't have the same wiring harness as the 87. Any Body with any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Your controller looks like this?

Do you have your pushbutton wired into where it says "ground terminal" in the picture above?

P.S. I do not think that is the correct picture, but it's similar. Is your controller relay like the above mounted on the rear top of the engine?

It's located on the back of the engine.

I only swapped the motor on the 66 chassis. Lots of messaging haha

I have the proper picture on my photobucket site, but of course they won't let me put it in the forum so you can see it. We can go with the above picture though.

The picture below is not right, but how do you have yours wired? You should have a large wire to the battery to the terminal that says "glowplugs" in the picture below.

The terminal that says "battery" in the picture below will be the one to the glowplugs.

The terminal that says "controller" in the picture below will go to your key on ignition wire.

The terminal that says "ground" in the picture below will go to your pushbutton switch and your switch will ground this wire. Take the original wire off this terminal and just put your pushbutton to this terminal.

I hate this. I am going to look for another picture hosting site.

66 f100 was my first truck, and the reason I went to track mech school to build this rig.

Noice...

Hell yea. Cool project.
I had a 63 w/ a 300 i6 Clifford 6=8 kit at one point. This is way more rad.

Garrett Littrell, when you say that your controller is on the back of the engine, do you mean bolted to the very back edge of the intake, or screwed into the head?

I don't have any help for the glow plug issue but very interested in what you did with the oil pan to make it fit into the old twin I beam frame/ crossmember. if you have any pics of your build preparing for the engine they would be awesome too. love the truck you built.

The above is the proper picture of the later style controller. The original white wire is taken off the lower terminal in the picture and you add your own wire, run it into the cab to a momentary pushbutton switch, and the other side of the switch is run to a good ground.

So I got it all wired up correctly. Thanks for the input guys. I just have a few things to button up now. It's been quite the undertaking, the wiring being the easy part haha

if it's possible, please post the pics on how you got the crossmember, steering linkage and oil pan to get along with each other.

thats exactly what I was talking about!

I attempted a 6.9 C6 swap into a 77 supercab F150 2wd many years ago and sorting the steering linkage issue was my achilles heal. I toyed with the idea of a late 70s F150 4wd steerign box in front of the crossmember but the front frame rails would have needed complete boxing and reinforcing. this was back before the internet was in use................. yes I'm old, but still pulling wrenches.
