ok who has done some budget 460 builds? i am prepping one to toss into my 81 f100. engine is from an 85 f350. currently has an edelbrock performer intake with a 750 double pump, and HEI dizzy installed.

not looking to go crazy nuts with it. been reading a bunch of builds but with the arguments of what works what doesnt gets annoying. i am wanting to do a cam swap, and straight up timing on it. for now it will retain the factory exhaust manifolds just for the fact i cant afford good headers for it that wont cook the starter. i do plan on headers down the road. was thinking of swapping intakes out to the RPM airgap series as i have found that the performer intakes are NOT that much better than the stock cast irons in relation to flow.

go.

Do you know what heads you have? If you have the tools a decent port job will really help especially on the exhaust side and it costs nothing just time. That combined with a mild cam will get you a good runner for sure!

Corey- the only thing I've done on my 460's was put in a timing set off a pre-73 460. i've been told the post 80's timing sets retard the cam timing 4* so the motors can pass a smog test. the fact that I'm constantly changing out exhaust manifolds on my repo trucks confirm that suspicion. power output is night and day different. still cannot pass a gas pump though. only advantage to going for an alu intake is to get some weight off the motor. the cast iron intake is an easy 100 lbs iirc.

Whatever heads were stock for an 85. I was planning on cleaning up the runners and gasket matching them

been looking recently, thinking of going with a comp cam 286H cam set.hudraulic flat tappet, shows 268/268 advertised lift, 218/218 at .050 lift with 110 degrees of seperation. 1500-5500 rpm range. then adding the 68-72 comp chain to get the timing set pre smog.

tempted to get a weiand stealth intake as tests show them to be great intakes compared to the edelbrock stuff. so far with the other little stuff i need i am at 800 bucks from jegs. lol

If you really want to make power you need chrome valve covers and a matching air cleaner

Small cam, clean up the heads, small carb will net good torque down low. Like Calvin said, get a double roller chain which sets the cam straight up timing wise. If you can keep air velocity high on the intake side it will make great torque. I actually was thinking of making a stroker with the above combo. 550 CI should make 600 ft lbs around 2400 RPM's with that setup.

I have one in my F350 I'm daily driving. Timing is still set retarded, but I bumped ignition timing from 6BTDC to about 12 BTDC and it runs so much better.

you could always turbo it like they did on engine masters with the SBF. then it could fall into the sleeper category...
