The factory turbos are more fore altitude compensation, not power (At least from what I've heard), I'm not sure about the Banks turbo kit, or Hypermax, because I don't have one.
I've gotten 250 at the wheels out of a factory turbo, so...

This is also about the max you can get out of a banks(wastegated, at least).

So provided that this kit pans out what would be the minimum necessary steps to assure a reasonable level of dependability? Of course I would add a boost and egt gauge in addition to the oil pressure, tranny and coolant temp gauges.

If I were buying a used turbo kit I would rebuild it. Dont buy the cheap Chinese crap and have it balanced.

Pretty much check that the turbine spins freely, there's no obvious end-play, and that if there is any side-play that the turbine doesn't touch/scrape the housing.

Install it, crank up the fuel, watch youd egts and smoke, and you'll probably be fine.

Generally speaking, smoke and high egts go hand in hand - start smoking and your egts will climb dangerously.

Thanks friend! According to the seller, the turbo is a factory ATS 093 and is perfect, with no end play. Do you feel that $ 750 is a good price for the kit? BTW, he's got two, perhaps he'd cut a deal on a twofer...

I'm going to totally say it depends on exactly where you are. I've seen 500-$800; in your case, it's probably a decent deal, if everything's there and it's in good shape.

Thanks, the seller seems pretty straight forward. Could I ask you to take a look at the craigslist add? I was just reading a .pdf installation manual from ats. I'm assuming that I'll need gaskets, and grommets to do things like relocation of the anti depression valve and such. Do you know of a good supplier?

Sure, I'll take a look. Not entirely sure what you'll need because being used, you might have a bunch of it with the kit. You can take a look and see what's still OK.

It also depends on what you take apart to get it off - most of those things might stay in place, like the turbo gaskets.

When I got a used Banks kit for my '88, I was able to re-use, well, basically everything. The rubber was still just fine.

Again, thanks. I'm emailing with the seller as I'm posting here. It's a leap of faith buying without laying hands on. He'll split the cost of shipping and wants to talk on the phone which I view as a good sign. Keeping my fingers crossed...

If so... buy them now!

That kit in the picture looks pretty complete, looks good.

Being as that's a Ford-spec kit, OP'll want to read this:
http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/ips4T...2.php?f=939473IDITurbochargedDieselEngine.pdf
That's the ford manual; explains how it goes together and comes apart.

Ignore the torque/power numbers, though... that only applies if you don't crank up the fuel on the IP. Crank it up and... whole different ball game.

edit:
also, if you do buy two of them; install one and then let me know if you want to sell one.
I'm not sure what shipping would be halfway across the country, but even so... it might still be reasonable enough.

Yeah, it'd be great if it were for both, but it's not. He's thinking that the shipping cost will be $50ish, so I asked if he'd split it and offered $775 shipped. He agreed but I'm thinking that it might be a bit more for him. Thanks for the pdf, I've got to hit the rack but I'll be reading it with my coffee in the morning...

If he has two and one is a factory ford kit and one is a ats kit opt for the ats kit because it has a 3 inch downpipe that's less restrictive than the factory ford one, the kit in the picture Is a factory kit still good yes but exhaust housing is slightly smaller

I was going to ask you guys about the down pipe. I'm fairly certain that both kits are factory, Would a upgraded down pipe make a significant difference over the stock pipe? Depending on funds, I'm planning to free up the exhaust. I'd like to keep it as quiet as possible as well as free flowing. Any recommendations? Down pipe? Muffler?

For some reason, I can't get the idi coffee table book to download. It just opens the same page in another window...
