I couldn't locate a step by step write up for draining water from a 7.3 psd fuel bowl. there's tons of info for newer trucks with the filters on the frame, but not much for the obs
best thing I found was this:
"Fuel bowl water drain - The water drain is a small lever (usually yellow) on the lower passenger side of the fuel bowl and likely pretty well buried by wiring and stuff. Some years have a pull cable attached to the lever that runs up to the cowl area. The "Water in Fuel" light on your dash will tell you when it's time to drain the fuel bowl. You open the valve for a few seconds and water/fuel/crud drains out of the fuel bowl, down the side of the engine and all over your driveway."
from this site: http://www.skoolie.net/forums/f34/the-care-and-feeding-of-the-ford-7-3l-diesel-10607.html

so I have a couple questions:
Is there any way to use a drain hose or jar to catch the fuel or do I have to just let it ******* all over the engine?

do I drain it while running or shut off? should I expect issues priming/restarting?
thanks

Engine off.
You can attach a hose. Look up from underneath. Passenger side of the harmonic balancer. Should see a small metal tube.

But up top, there's a rubber piece between the drain and the metal tube. It could be unhooked.

I didn't realize the lever spins. It looked like it should push straight down to me.

I guess my metal was blocked. nothing can out with the truck off, but it drained with the truck running.
after that it drained while off.
got a couple oz of water and filled a 2 litter with dirty sludge before it ran clean.
thanks for the help

Yup, the bottom of the bowls are usually pretty nasty. Lol
Is this a obs or SD?

Yeah, easier to get to those fittings at the rear of the heads with the turbo out. Lol

I'll jump in on this. I have coolant somehow entering the fuel bowl! Is there a seal or something worn which is letting this happen. I have to drain it before starting otherwise when it stars a heap of white smoke is emitted from the exhaust & wants to stall.
Please, what do I look for, as no-one in regional Australia knows anything about these engines !

Uh.....
Sorry to break it to you, but actual coolant in the fuel is from injector cups.

Are you 100% sure it's coolant, not just water? You could have water in the tank.

Well I've green coolant in the radiator & it's green in the container when I drain the filter. I thought the filter was before the injectors ?
I have previously removed the tank & added fresh fuel along with a new fuel pump & some other sensors which were suspect.
On a 466 inter engine, I had coolant leaking on the outside of the engine from an injector cup. ?????

The 466 is a slightly different engine.
The fuel goes through the lift pump, to the filter, through the lift pump again, through the heads to the injectors, returns through the filter, then back to the tanks.

If you want a diagram showing that, I'll find it.
