I decided to hook my heater core back up now so I can use the blend door to get it where I want it. With the stock system it was bypassed so that I could stay cool, now with this refrigerant it gets too cold! I hit a new record low on the freeway yesterday

Honestly I talked to another member who said to always run fan speed on hi and that's what I've been doing and I haven't ran into a freeze issue yet. It makes a lot of condensation though I've had a lot of people when I'm parked tell me my radiator leaked because I'll have a big puddle underneath if I sit idling.

It actually stays so cold the compressor is cold while running! Before it would temp around 150 now it's cold to the touch from the return

That's awesome. Maybe I'll redo mine one day in a similar fashion.
Currently mine works great with the R134A. Leaves a puddle like yours.

Did a whole new ac system in my truck last summer, if only I had known about this then....

Honestly, I'd just install a thermostat so you can control the temps. Heck, you could even install it inside the cab, so you can just set the air temp coming out of the AC.

No wasting extra energy cooling it below what you want(and then adding heat from the heater core), no cycling of the system... Just air exactly what you want.

My '93, surprisingly, came with working AC so I haven't had to mess with it yet... and even that gets cold after a while. I'm kind of tempted to install a thermostat myself, just so it cycles as-needed instead of manually going from 'ac' to 'vent' when I start feeling cold.

Sounds like guys have used this mix before but mixing refrigerants is usually not recommended due to each having different pressures and temps on a PT Chart...not to mention your blend being flammable and when things go wrong it could be disastrous. Some blends have pressure/temps and boiling points that are very close like 410a and so you know what to expect in a closed system.

As far as adding heat to warm it up...that can mess with your pressures as well. A refrigerant better suited for comfort cooling and not for a freezer might be a better way to go.

Yes when I did the switch I put on a new compressor (old one blew) new drier and flushed the entire system. After that it was simply add the 5.5 oz isobutane can and about 16oz propane

If interested here's a short video of it in action. The end is when traffic opens up and it really starts to cool

While these are combustable gases, its not really any worse then propane injection, or things of that nature.

Everyone should note that he is in CA, with low humidity this time of the year. I imagine that if you live where its humid, you will run into serious AC freezing issues unless you run it on high the entire time. Even then....

What you do is install a thermostat on the evaporator or just after the orifice; set it to a temp around 32F.
Now, you can get 'ice cold' air(though only 32F vs 0, depending on thermostat temp), but if the evaporator freezes up, the temp will drop and kick off the thermostat.

I believe you can also find "therm-o-disk" style defrost thermostats that turn on at 23F and off at 45F - designed such that if the evaporator freezes up and the temps drop, it stays 'off' long enough for the temps to rise and melt all the ice before turning on again.

I personally had issues on one truck with too-cold AC freezing up the condenser in a matter of a few minutes, at which point it would stop blowing air and I'd have to turn it off.
The thermostat I added fixed that right up.
