Got it running again......

Almost 2 years ago, Momma drove it home, and parked in the driveway. I had a noise I was investigating on the Excursion and ended up getting gear lube on the rear brake rotor.... The 2000 P71 had a bad intake, and this was before the 07 P71 and 92 IDI came home. Got in the Jetta to go buy brake clean (I have a gremlin that apparently lives off of brake clean, can't seem to keep any in-stock) to clean up the rotor, and the Jetta wouldn't start..... Would turn over, but never fire. So I walked to the Dollar General close to the house and bought some brake clean and got the Excursion back on the road. Went out the next day to troubleshoot the Jetta, and found it wasn't drawing fuel from the tank. Did some basic troubleshooting, fond these don't have a lift pump, and concluded the IP had died. Car has 305,000 miles, doesn't have the original IP, but have not idea how many miles are on it..... So at this point a $150 intake was cheaper than a $500+ IP rebuild, so the P71 got fixed and the Jetta was parked out of the way. This was late fall of 2015, so winter comes and the Jetta is put on the back burner. So the Excursion is my daily, and the P71 is Mommas daily. Come spring / tax time 2016, I start looking for a different daily, don't want to run the mileage up on the Excursion, and want something the routine maintenance is cheaper on. Now enter the 07 P71 that is my new daily. Excursion goes back to the family/weekend/tow vehicle it was bought for, and the 2 P71 are now the dailies, and the Jetta continues to hold down one side of the driveway. Last summer we were busier than a 1 armed paper hanger, so last year was maintenance and repair only, on the stuff that was already on the road. Then come winter, again, so another winter of being put on the back burner.

Now come to this past weekend, it was a "work on all the s**t out in the garage I can weekend. So I replaced the ball joints in the Excursion (XRF, really good stuff!!!!) and vacuum seals, since one "exploded" when I was taking it apart. Look at a squeak on the 07 P71, that I found was a missing exhaust clamp, drag the 00 P71 in the garage to replace the fuel pump, (that quit Friday morning) and look at the Jetta, if possible...... Got everything else done, or on hold, awaiting parts, so the Jetta's number actually popped up. In this time, I've had some old school VW Diesel guys, give me some troubleshooting tips. One common theme was to check the rubber lines that come out of the tank, they like to split and allow air into the supply side, causing a loss in prime (sound familiar). So I pull the rear seat out, open the access panel in the floor of the trunk and check out the lines. They appear to have been replaced, and checking the route to replace it again, it goes under the car to the water separator. Also, this spring is when the 92 IDI came home with my Son, and over the last month we've had some fuel supply issues (showerhead BS) and I've had to troubleshoot the fuel system. So, now lets use that knowledge to troubleshoot the Jetta IDI. So, what is one of the first things we tell someone on the trucks to do to narrow down where the problem is? Hook a can of fuel to the lift pump or filter and see if the engine will run. I had about a half a quart of 2-cycle oil sitting in the garage from putting it in the 92 to lube the pump and fill the filter, and put about a pint of diesel kleen in there and shook it up. I put a new piece of fuel line in the bottle and hooked it to the fuel filter. I'd charged the battery and kept the charger on it. Waited for the WTS light to go out, held the throttle to the floor, cranked it over until it stopped (not sure it's "normal" but this one will crank for 8-10 seconds and will stop). Cranked it 3 or 4 cycles and still nothing, just like all the other times..... My oldest Son (the one with the IDI) was helping, and I asked him to pull the hose and and see if there was any suction on the line. Toward the end of the cycle, it hit once. He put the hose back in the bottle and tried again. After a couple more cycles, it caught and puttered for a few seconds and finally levered out and idled..... ***!!!!!! It ran until the bottle was almost empty. I shut it off, hooked the line back up, restarted it and it ran fine. Did a once over everything, and took it for a ride.... First time it's moved on its own power in almost 2 years. Only issue I found was a spongy brake pedal, caused by a rusted through rear brake line. So, gonna replace the brake line and put it back in service........
