I lurk a lot here, learning as I go. I live in an emission controlled part of Colorado:(. Considering I need to pull my engine to fix a badly leaking oil pan seal and probably rear main, I'm considering a few mods while I'm at it. Is there an ability to go to a Moose Junior pump and upgraded injectors but still meet 35% opacity maximum for emissions? Would a smoke puff limiter be needed and beneficial? If I went to head studs, can I increase the boost and still meet emission requirements? Will this significantly help my power output but maintain clean exhaust without upgrading the injection pump? What other maintenance/mods should I perform (besides a new clutch and gaskets) while the engine is out? Thanks for the input!!

you need to know what your test parameters are first. a smoke puff limiter is a big help in a steady increase in rpm, but not as good in a snap throttle test. "F350camper" used to live in CO and did mod his truck. I'll wake him over at FB and have him drop in.

It states "lug down test" at "zero shift", 40, 50, and 60mph, if that helps.

First off, don't show a frown that you have the great opportunity of living in a place where they care about putting you and your loved ones health first! See,it's all in the way ya look at things.:)

I sure think the answer to your questions is an astounding yes! The reason I say this is because I have a bull moose, intercooler and smoke puff limiter on chip truck and the only way I can purposely get the truck to puff a bit of smoke,is just before a downshift from OD into 3rd.There's no way your going to snap the throttle quick and fail with this setup........at least I sure don't think so anyway.
These smoke puff limiters are slick little buggers. You can't do what these do with your foot.

Ah crap. They're smart out there.I dunno then lol.Probably because you can really dial that SPL down hard if you need too, make sure the engine is running really warm (200+) and set the timing back a touch to 6-7 BTDC.

if you are comfortable with the fuel screw and how it works. You wont have an issue. I'd say do what you want, bring it to get tested. If it passes, great! If it fails don't sweat it. Back the fuel screw off and have it re-tested the next day. ehhhummm Keep careful track of how far you backed it off so you can put it back the way it was for when you are not in the emission area or operating it off road ehhhummm.

On edit, you'd want to chat with mel also on messing with the fuel screw on one of his pumps in your situation.

How would they properly measure a lug test with a standard transmission?

also, since your turbo is wastegated, it will only help you in this situation. One of the main reasons I went with a gated dryer when I had your motor and I lived there.

You are correct in the beauty of Colorado and the outdoors, although as I watch all the EGR and DPF deleted Cummins from bordering counties and smell the stench of "skunk" exuding from surrounding cars and buildings, I believe my wee little bit of IDI smoke (with a little filtered waste oil) shouldn't be a big problem.

don't forget you're at sea level he's already high by a mile :D

Nope, I don't support and have never been that green high (contrary to what the rest of the country thinks about Coloradans):D. I do live at 8500 feet above sea level though which makes that turbo necessary! Speaking of, theoretically, would it make sense that I should be able to turn up my turbo a few more PSI and still preserve head gaskets at altitude as long as the truck never visits the flatlands?

Guys, he said Moose JUNIOR, not a bull Moose :rotflmao

Just make sure it's timed properly and I'm sure you'll be fine

Edit: the reason for the lug test is you'll be making essentially 0 boost........

Yeah but that's why I said it's probably an astounding yes, because I'm running a bull moose and I think it would pass his test.
That said though,I don't know if a 100cc bull w/ intercooler & smoke puff limiter would be as clean as a 90cc junior w/ just smoke puff limiter.

Rob is right in that you could get whatever ip you wanted.Adjust the fuel to pass any smog test and then get home and turn it back up lol. It's not a big deal what one truck does so this seems harmless.........it's that if we all do these things collectively is where we dirty up our air.Anyway,I'm not going to go on about that lol it's just that,I'm sure a good common ground can be found here,to pass this smog test and still have all the power. If it means adding an intercooler, then hey,it's win/win but without having the proper understanding of how much the 10cc difference is between those ip's it's all guessing on my part.:D I do agree,I would for sure speak with Mel about it on the phone and get his thoughts.
