I know these engines are expected to last forever, but after a zillion miles they will need to be refreshed. Has anyone done a complete rebuild, and are there any really expensive parts to it? Outside of the turbo, I would not expect any surprises. But I do not own one yet, and want to be prepared.

I have heard the praises of the ALH sung here and am proficient in the mechanics of a rebuild, but am not well educated in the electronics. Once the mechanical stuff is fresh, I would expect nothing special to do with the electrics. Or am I wrong?

Is the IP completely electric, or are there replaceable mechanical parts?

I have seen plenty of these cars that are clean, have good interiors and are not beat up, but have about 300k miles. The prices are pretty inexpensive, so adding a rebuild might be a cost effective way to get high MPG without paying for a new car. I welcome thoughts and cautions.

I've never done a rebuild on an ALH, but as far as I know, they're pretty straightforward. One big thing to keep in mind is that that special tools are required for some parts of the rebuild, notably including the timing belt.

The pump has mechanical as well as electronic parts...IIRC it's similar to a VP-44 on an early 24 valve Cummins.

You will need a ***-COM cable (or access to someone who has one) to properly set the injection timing after getting the engine back together. There may be other parameters that need to be set as well, but I don't know for sure.

Hopefully that'll get you started, and hopefully someone with more experience will add his $.02 ;Sweet
