How often to check timing?

Its been about 50k since I messed with it. Any reason to recheck it?

This is a question not often asked....
Why???
Seems every time you put a pump, injectors,or a turbo on .....its timing time.
It's generally agreed 100-125 k is a life span for the system.
As such a minimum should be (imho) 50k.
Own a meter?!
25k as this would acct.for calibration degradation.

Just to keep up with wear. I don't know what the wear curves look like but it seems over the life it can be significant.

you will get all kinds of answers on this.
in my unprofessional and medicated opinion....
these engines will never be powerhouses.
if youre not running any other types of fuels,
its pretty miniscule in comparison to say, a blown big block on alky.
I set it and forget it until I decide to mess with fuels, or change the fuel system.

If you start blowing white or blue smoke at startup or any other time, you definitely need to check it.

If it's sounding off, running rough at idle, might be a good idea to check it.

I am **** about vehicle maintenance. I rechecked mine at 10,000 miles to see if there was any noticeable difference. Set exactly where it was when I installed it (Baby Moose). I will probably be checking it every 20-30,000 miles as time allows. The older it gets, the more change will happen is my best guess. Any changes in smoke, or how it runs means that it is an easy thing to rule out the timing as a problem.

Lets say you installed a pump AND new injectors.. Not used injectors or reuilt injectors. The springs will settle after about 5000 miles of use. the pop pressure drops but not all injector springs drop pressure at the same amount. They will not drop from 1850 to 1400 in 5000 miles either. Once our fuel system settles in maybe rechecking timing around 50,000 miles or as posted. When fuel mileage drops for no reason seen like a low tire or hauling a heavy load.

I own a meter, I toss it on normally every spring just to check. Takes 5 mins to check
I don't really have any of the symptoms described above, but it would be interesting to check the timing on my newly acquired 1988 F250 IDI 7.3 since I know nothing of its history. Odometer reads 27,000 but I have no idea how many other times it may have done so.

Could you tell me about the meter you own?

I live in western Washington State. I'd like either have my timing checked (who'd be reputable to do this?) or, preferably, to check it myself if possible.

Might give R&D IDI Performance a call - they're over in Maple Valley.

As already posted. Check around 50,000 miles. Or when you notice any smoke or mileage changes. I barely do 5000 miles a year on my rig. I do test my meters every time they are returned. Its no big deal and takes barley any time.
