Hey all,

My Dad is buying some oil for our PSD's and asked if I wanted to buy some and get the free shipping. Was looking at the 10-30w HD Synthetic, right now I have conventional in it and has probably always been that way.

Would you guys recommend getting some or just use the same oil?

Thanks

keep doing what you are doing. synthetic oils are great , but changing it regularly is most important. you could put a powerstroke oil filter on your idi if you want another quart in the system even.

if you want to find oil leaks use synthetic oil :)

Wondering if that's my truck marking it's parking spots some. Going to mobil 15w40 at some point from rotella 5w40. Doesn't help I need to clean the block anyway, just need to jack it up and have a go at it :p

As someone who is not opposed to Amsoil per se(It's really good stuff), don't.
There are a couple of reasons:
1. Seals. Unless you have just re-sealed your engine, stick with conventional. It tends to reduce or eliminate leaks that might otherwise happen.
Synthetic /will/ find every possible leak. Everything that can be, will be leaking.
2. Soot. These engines are /really/ dirty. The massive ring gaps produce a ton of blowby, and this blowby includes a lot of soot and other particles which end up in the oil.
A 7.3 Powerstroke is a much cleaner motor, overall.

Unless you are going to add a bunch of bypass filtering(I'm personally looking at a centrifuge filter for a future build), it's really not worth it - If you keep the normal drain interval, it will cost you a *lot* of money, and if you extend it too much, you'll get soot and other things sludging up on you.

Honestly, just get the cheapest 15W40 diesel oil you can get your hands on(I like Mobil Delvac myself... it's often on sale and/or mail in rebate), and change it frequently. Like every 2.5-3K frequently. The overall cost won't be too high, and it'll keep the insides *much* cleaner.

As far as the normal oil filter goes, use the Motorcraft FL-1995, which is the Powerstroke filter. These are pretty cheap, good filters, and will fit the IDI trucks just fine.

Synthetic doesn't cause leaks. That is a myth that needs to die. If you have a current leak it may leak faster but in my case it leaked way less with synthetic. To say it will cause new leaks though is just not the case.

Amsoil is awesome stuff. I currently have it in the differentials and transmissions of all my trucks and my brothers trucks. I have yet to find a better grease for the king pins on these trucks than amsoil. Its just quality stuff!

Well, erm...
It certainly 'caused' my pre-rebuild 88 7.3 to leak from the front and rear seals when it wasn't leaking(noticeably anyway) before.
After it was rebuilt, the same synthetic oil worked just fine for the one oil change I used it on.

I think it's fair to say that it doesn't cause leaks... but if your seals are already worn, it will 'cause' leaks... because the conventional ended up plugging them one way or another.

fuel lubed injectors/pump don't need synthetic oil, you don't need it. you will need to change the synthetic oil same interval as conventional anyhow. soot soot soot:peelout

if you had a rebuilt powerstroke, break it in with synthetic then stick with synthetic. might get you a few more miles before its next rebuild.

the synthetic oil arguement/sales pitch is a never ending one.
only 1 thing you need to remember ---- service that truck regularly and it will last . regardless of your oil choices.

synthetic oils are great in other driveline parts where there is no soot being introduced and no filtration going on, just not needed in these diesel engines. big waste of funds unless you are in extreme conditions like at the poles.

ever look at the service intervals posted in an owners manual for non engine parts?

Thank you all for the info but I think I will just stick conventional. I do know a lot more now then I did before.

I've used synthetic (Amsoil) in my 1988 F350 since it was new, currently 20w-50 ARO is in it. 20w-50 (diesel rated) appears to use less oil, and still starts well in winter without a block heater (10 degrees F is about the low here).

Oil change interval has varied, but mostly ~5000 miles. Synthetic keeps the soot in solution better, and it doesn't make any difference with seals leaking. Here's how it looked in 2010 when I replaced the valve cover gaskets...
