Couple of questions about turbo chargers. First: How long do they typically last? After a couple of repairs I finally got my 2000 on the road today. Even when I test drove it back in Nov, it just didn't seem to have a lot of umf and I never hear it spool up. Having said that I can't get it to smoke at all (not that I'm into belching fuel out the tail pipe) so the turbo might be fine.

Second: Is there anything to watch out for when buying a replacement torbo? I noticed that they sell as low as $300 on eBay while others are $500 or more. Love the idea of saving money but hate the idea of "crying twice".

Thanks
Mark

Any diesel should not smoke being stock.
Mileage means nothing. Check the play.

Yes, I forgot that I hadn't put it in my sig yet. 2000 F350 Crew Cab, 170,000 miles. Everything is bone stock on her, except for the rust.... That was added later.

Is there a tech article on checking the play? I've not even had the air filter out yet, so I'm a complete noob on this. All my work on it so far has been suspension and brakes. Basic knuckle busting, rust in the eye stuff.

is this hose connected? and the controller hooked up? (red circles)
without this the turbo wont create any boost.
my truck has always had a defined spool.
you can also install a boost fooler,

these engines are computer controlled,
in stock form they wont let it smoke.

don't buy the 300 dollar deal off e-bay,
when I rebuilt mine, I ordered a center section from pure turbos with a billet wheel, and swapped my housings

Thanks, I'll take a look. I'm actually not interested in letting the truck smoke. I have no desire to waste the fuel. Just want to make sure everything is working, and try to keep it that way for a while :)

Steps to hearing the turbo: 1. 6637. 2. Bigger exhaust, including bigger downpipe. 3. Chip it.

Just pull the intake hose off, and see if it has any play. Not much to it, but to do it.

Will do. I wasn't sure if it was that easy, or if I needed to disassembly a little farther.

I'm not willing to put time/$$ into the truck from a performance stand point. The underbody is too far gone to justify dumping resources into it. This will be my "Learner" Power Stroke. Learn to repair it (vs my IDI), keep it road worthy, if I'm lucky sell it in a year or two for close to what I gave for it, and buy another crew cab that's in noticeably better shape. In the mean time, it will haul me back and forth to work while making repairs to the IDI, and also haul the camper, wife, and kids all at once for local camping trips. Basically it fills a gap (both knowledge and time) until I can afford to buy something better, or at least that's my dream, I mean plan...

Before you go crazy, check for boost leaks first. Check the down pipe for leaks.

The down pie is easy. If you see soot on the firewall, you have a bad leak. Any soot around the collector means you have a leak.

You can make a leak detector with some hardware store parts. I think there is a thread here on how to make it. If not google can be your friend.:D
