I need some info on what everyone is getting for milage. I am having a problem with the sending units pulling all the fuel from the tanks (19 gallons front and 18 gallons rear) so when the gauge reads 1/2, i run out of fuel but based on milage I have fuel left.
My truck is a 93 f350 with 4.10 gears and the EOd4 transmission. Based on the best I can see, after several tanks of fuel and dividing the gallons on refil to miles driven, I am getting around 10-11mpg. My driving is a mix of highway and city and I am easy off the line and usually drive around 60mph.
I have seen people say they are getting 15-20 mpg and am wondering what I can do, if anything, to increase the milage since diesel is over $1 more than regular fuel per gallon. (we are being robbed)

You may have bad injectors or a worn out IP. Hpwever, you may want to try checking tire PSI, running Diesel Kleen or some other injector cleaner, Replace fuel filter etc.

Also try to keep the highway RPM's at 2k or below for best MPG

Lots of things can play into it. Like Green said, also timing, and a good cool source of air. I removed the Banks box setup and just stuck a filter right off my turbo, over the engine as a temporary rig. My mileage puttering around went from 13-14 to 10.5-11.5. I'll find out if it's a coincidence when I get cool intake air again. I got 14.6 last straight highway fillup on the same setup. Are you running big tires and lift? That'll knock it down, too.

On the sending units, sounds like the usual broken fuel pickup.

Well if you have an E4OD trans that means your rig is at least an 89 truck. Now a set of 4.10 gears sometimes means you have a dually. Not knowing what you are driving causes nothing but wag here. Please fill in your signuture so we know what were talking to on trucks. Timing has lots to do with the performance and mileage as does the age of the injection pump and injectors. Usually we like to state if your injectors are painted the same color as the heads that they are original. About 125 to 150 thousands miles is whats concidered to be useful mileage from the pump and injectors. Some get more and some get less. The drop in hp and performance is so slow with bad fuel system parts is diffucult to feel over time. As a pump wears down the timing begins to retard. Also any pump replacement or injector replacement will cause the engine to need timing again. New injectors open at a higher presure so the timing is retarded or the injectors open later in the power stroke of the engine. Hope this clears up some questions.

Original ip and injectors with alight fuel leak at the filter head I'm rockin 11 mpgs right now. Wich really sucks because I use to get 24... 19 before I switched to a good quality synthetic fluid in the axle and trans. That bumped it up to the 20s.
Just keep it maintained well with a good fuel system and shell do you fine..
Remember that right foot influences mileage alot too.

I am not too happy now, I'm guessing the winter blend has dropped me to the 12-13mpg range. Prior to that I was approaching 15 as my engine was just starting to break in good.

I'm getting between 11-14 mpg in town and some highway with the truck in my sig, normally on B100 biodiesel which has about 91% of the BTUs of D2. You should do better than 10 mpg on the highway, but you may never see low 20s. I'd say it is reasonable to expect 12-15 in town and 15-18 on the highway depending on how heavy you are and what gear ratio. The timing or a worn out fuel system are prime suspects but then some of these trucks just seem to get great mileage and other....not so much.

If you run it in it's sweet spot, where the torque is, then you work the engine the least and it's the happiest. You get the best mileage there.

I have a leaking return line on the 86 and get about 20 consistantly. I just bought a Military Blazer with the 6.2l diesel, and am still figuring out what it gets. Tho I know it does get pretty decent mileage, I'd say low 20s with my current setup

just did the math on the most recent tank, some of which was towing a 5k lb trailer and most of the other was city traffic driving.

I got right at 14 MPG, so nothing to write home about.

I think the best I got was 19MPG on a straight 60MPH drive to Houston

4:10's dont help, and I prob need new injectors
