Remove the top on this & that not that .....

Can someone tell me what this is a pic of on my truck

That is your air/vacuum pump - do not attempt to service

DO ATTEMPT to service this by removing the top
and consuming at your leisure .... :sly

Its as posted above but... It is serviceable. On the back side of it there is a bolt or plug. Remove that to add oil. They run dry and the bearing fails causeing you to loose your vacuum. Then you have no brakes or vacuum to run the ac doors or cruise control. To service it you need to remove it from the engine. Open it and allow it to drain. Then refill with oil thats heavy like stp.

If your vacuum/air pump doesn't work .....

How can I tell if it is going bad and is it suppose to be open at the top like the pic shows

Do your power brakes work ?

How is the tension on your belt & how is the
condition of your belt & pullies in general ?

That is one sure way of knowing if your pump is going or gone ...

The older I get - the more this applies:

" If it an't broke - don't fix it "

By the time your pump goes, its' too late to do anything
as far as maintenance and if you do take it apart
that might affect the value of it as a core (depending on
where you get a new one) .....

Anything is serviceable I guess, but I don't think
this pump has a recommended manufacturer
maintenance schedule .....

Although I might be wrong (again) .... :dunno

I've noticed that on very cold starts, *sometimes* the "Brake" light comes on for a bit before the engine warms up.

If I drive when the light is on, the brakes are very hard to press, it always seems to go away after a min

Could this be a sign that the Vaccum pump(looks original) is going out. Or is the booster to blame.

If it is the Vac Pump, maybe I should oil it ??

Sorry to hijack, been wanting to ask about this forever and seemed a good place

Similar concern.

I noticed a couple weeks ago, brake light comes on. It has two symbols in it, one is for e-brake on reminder, the other is an exclamation point in drum brake symbol. The pedal is off the switch and doesn't appear to be stuck down, also, light will drift in/out when cold. Takes about 2 miles to quit.... which makes me wonder about vacuum pump or booster.

to the last two posts, start testing vacum I wouldnt think that these syptoms would by a booster. need at least 21 in hg and need to get there almost instantly after cranking. if you get bad results at the booster make sure to start working your way back to the pump and rule out a line or connection leaking
