ok so my 88 CC DRW LB it wouldnt be a problem swapping it over to a 355 rear i got 410 in it now an will not be towing with it like i had planned so the wifey has said either sell it or do something to make it affordable to drive ......

There is another option aside from swapping out the rear end and making it worthless for towing. You can just install a gear vendors, or US Gear OD or a Brownie and get an extra overdrive and have the best of both worlds ;Sweet

hhhhhmmmmmmm 3.55 with a E4OD and dually would tow just fine. The old man did it for years with a SRW second gen 12valve cummins and auto pulling a 14K 5er.... it was slow to start rolling but once it did it kept moving and he goes from Oregon to AZ back to Oregon and sometimes to CO.

but I will keep my 4.56 and get a GV OD...... as it stands with the 4.56 I get 15 mpg.

I have towed 9k on the hitch with 355, towed just fine. If i had a 5 speed it would have been better.

I tow heavy often with my 3.55 and zf-42. It works out well most times but I do find myself looking for a lower first gear when starting out.
My last truck was E4OD with 3.55s and I had no problems starting out. If you are contemplating a tranny swap and think towing will improve look for the later zf-47 with the tall first gear. If i am starting out on steep ground I find I need to use low range on the transfer case pretty often.
If my tranny ever needs to go on the bench I am going to change out the first gear.

My truck feels slow with 3.55s and a 4 speed. Pulling this loaded trailer seems to be it's limit. I can maintain speed on flat ground... most of the time.

That's probably 4500# between the trailer and the load. Truck is probably 7000# so you're at 12,500 combined roughly. The truck in my sig does fine with that load one I get going but it's a challenge to maintain speed in traffic where I'm shifting a lot, and that's with a turbo.

If you think that is slow, just try towing about 15k w 3:55 gears:rotflmao. It did it. But it didnt like it. Took it back home with my gasser truck;Sweet

The Bronco weighs 4500 alone, not sure on the trailer, but I can safely guess around 2000, so a bit more weight then thought.

What I thought was REALLY sad is I couldn't get the truck over 70mph with this trailer hooked up with a washer and dryer in it... :dunno That was flat ground on the freeway - wind resistance? Either way that is so sad - the Tahoe pictured pulled the trailer with ease, the damn thing was filled to the gills.

I'm hoping a new IP and injectors will help... I'll get it timed when I'm done-

Yeah, it was slow going up hills, but pulls good on flat ground. The hill between MN and WI on Hwy8 is a ***** if I get stuck behind a slow car. I usually go into the hill as fast as I can in 4th and downshift towards the top 1/3rd.

I'll be dragging my truck to Gilbert with the 6.9 - I need to fix the ZF I've got and get the rest of the turbo parts and I should be set for faster pulling...

Your 88 axle is the same as every 86-97 sterling 10.25 axle so there are adapters available
