different transfer case?

I am going to look at a 1987 F250 6.9 L automatic. Every Ford I have seen from that time had the transfer case shift lever coming up from the drivers side of the hump. In the pictures the owner sent, this one seems to come more out of the top of the hump. Is this a different transfer case than common?

The shifter and location isn't specific to any transfer case, they will all interchange, but, being an 87, There is indeed a good possibility of it being a 1345 like an 80-86 truck.

Yes, a vacuuming would be good, but you should have seen the one in Missoula MT I looked at a couple weeks ago. The topper, ext.-cab and even the cab were full of the guy's s**t. Fortunately, it reaked of cigarette smoke so bad from the coffee can full of butts that I was not compelled to even go for a test ride.

Eventually, I will find one of these IDI to my liking, at a reasonable price, maybe this one maybe not. Anyway, to hi-jack my own thread, here are a couple pictures of the engine which the seller sent me. Do any of you with experience see anything in these pictures which would be of concern? (I still need to go look at it myself, but it is a few hours away and I have been picking the seller for information and pictures by email.) Truck has (supposedly) 201700 miles.

What's on top of the air cleaner? looks like a mouse has nested! My F350 was trashed when I bought it, the dash mat was nasty from cigarette smoke, ashtrays full of butts, the bed was full of firewood debris, it had almost no brakes, no heater (had to replace heater core and hoses), the carpets were gross (spend hours shampooing them). But hey, got a good deal, so it's all piddly stuff. Some people are slobs and cannot take care of crap!

My additional issue on the Missoula truck was the 1/2 can of starting fluid he kept wedged in the fender under the hood, along with the oil cans. (Valve covers seemed to leak horribly.)

As to this rig, it does look like a mouse nest, owner says they do not drive it much since they got rid of their horses. He also indicates the heat core leaking (not a big deal) and the need to keep the radiator topped off. Though I am wondering if there may be a head gasket leak, since it seems unlikely anyone would let a heater core leak so much and for so long that they needed to top off the radiator.

I have it in my mind that I want a 6.9 L and since I like the '87-'91 body style... I guess I am looking for a 1987 F250 extended cab 4X4 6.9 L manual prefered but automatic o.k., not a beat to death ranch or logger truck but showing it's age is o.k., within 300, maybe up to 500 miles, of Helena. Have seen a couple very over priced trucks, and some poor condition at best, so I keep looking.

the ac compressor is leaking oil theres wet spots under it so consider a r12 recharg or switching over to 134a
also that ratsnest on the air cleaner may be from else where so be careful

The engine looks way too clean for over 200,000 miles on it... The positive battery cable looks like its a newer replacement as does the ac compresser. No appearant valve cover leaks either. In 88 the engines were the 7.3 block with a C6 but in 89 they were 7.3 and the E4OD trans. The C6 6.9 is a very good combo too. Actually any idi engine will fit in the location and they both look the same. Just to the drivers side of the injection pump gear cover you will find the block serial numbers... It will tell you if the engine is 6.9 or 7.3 because thats part of the numbers... Just clean off and post back what the numbers are. I can probably tell you if the engine is original or not to that truck...

The majority of 80-86 trucks had the NP208 t-case, I've had an 85 and an 86 that had it and the t-case lever was on top of the hump like your picture. The trucks that had the BW1345 or BW1356 had the lever moved to the side of the hump. My current 86 does have the side mounted lever and I assume the BW1356 but I have'nt been under it in awhile so I cant recall for sure.

Actually the majority of these IDI's had 1345's (early) and 1356's (late). The NP208 was a rare bird in these IDI's.;Sweet If your truck has the T-case sifter located on the driver's side floor board and not in the tranny tunnel (like pictured above), that cab is a newer model than '86. Like stated above, the shifter location is model year specific, not t-case specific, they all can interchange.

You are probably right, most of the 80-86 trucks I have played with were gassers and all had the 208. I guess I assumed the IDI's would follow suit. I did go out and double check my 86 and the shifter is on top of the hump. I stop driving the truck for 3 days and forget everything about it. :D
