So, I drove the truck yesterday and today for the first time in many weeks, it's been sitting in the carport at home on account of the sky-high fuel prices.

This morning I started it up and the key worked great, the ignition switch has always worked nice and smooth. At lunch I drove it and noticed the dash lights were all still on (self test mode when you are cranking...) Noticed the ignition switch is really a bear to turn now.

It still moves through all the positions, but it is a SOB to turn... It's getting parked at home and getting the batteries unhooked when I get home tonight pending switch repairs (don't want my new truck going up in flames.)

So... What part is it that goes out and causes this? Is it the ignition column mechanism, or the electrical switch itself?

It could be either because they are both connected together. One thing you can do is remove the ignition switch from the steering column. You will probably have to lower the column to do this. With it disconnected you can them turn your key and if it turns hard then you know it is the cylinder. If it turns easy then try moving the ignition switch with a small screwdriver where the rod was going into it. Forward for on towards the brake pedal and back towards you for off.

X2.

It is usually the switch mounted low on the column (they only cost about $7 at the parts store) that fails. But not always.

sticky key

I just did mine the rack and pinion that the key turns is telling you it's about to break. Go to stolen and Recovered web site for parts and instructions on how to rebuild it.

I had the same issue.. even with a new steering column it was hard to turn. When the temp hit -20 it was almost impossible. I sprayed some lock lube into the ignition key switch and it turns perfectly now. Before it wouldn't even kick back on its own from Start-On, now it does. I would start with a $7 can of lock spray first before tearing into your column.
