Hey, I really feel dumb for asking this, but I have been trying to take off the fuel filter, and need help on how........there is a circle metal piece below that, tried twisting that off and it wont budge, and tried twisting the filter itself off, but same thing.......it feels like its about to break sso i dont want to twist too hard......any ideas?

Second question.......what is the best way to drain the tanks.........there is diesel fuel that is 3 years old in these things LOL

Thanks For your help, Mario

PS Its a 94 ford f350 with a ats turbo 7.3l

Filter spins on like an oil filter. the base will unscrew from the filter it's self. Sometimes they can get glued on because the rubber gasket wasn't lubed before installing. So just unscrew it and then when installing the new one I always take a small bit of oil and lube up the gasket. If you don't have anything handy just pull the dipstick and use whats on the stick - it will do the trick.

as for the older fuel - just fill up with fresh and run it out. let the filter and the water sep do their jobs.

i ended up having to use a oil fitler wrench to get my fuel filter off the first time. there should be an arrow on the filter somewhere, telling you which way to spin on or off. dont take the bottom metal piec off until you get the filter off first. i found out the hard way and dumped all of the fuel onto the engine. i thought that it was for taking off the filter.

Thanks for the help. Got the thing off, I tried my oil filter wrench but it was too small! So I found an old fan belt in the back, and wraped that around the filter and got it off. Lol. As for the gas I have new gas with some diesel kleen in it, I will try and start it up once I charge the bats.........they didn't need to be charged but I figured why not. Again thanks for the help

A double dose of injector cleaner in a tank of diesel may clear up the sticky pump. I use Stanadyne Performance Formula. Regular tank dose is 4 ozs every tank full. Some do this every other tank.:dunno

I'm not that keen on having him run the fuel through the tanks.
biggest reason is where the vehicle was parked for two years. This is a 4x4 that was not parked in a sheltered area and was not mothballed properly.
The amount of running problems I saw indicated to me that there is a certain possibility of gunk in the tanks especially the front tank since it was very exposed to temperature extremes while in storage. the stalling out could very well be algae clogging up the pickup screen or filters.
just my .02

The metering valve is sticking in the injection pump causing it to stall or die when you let off the accerlerator. You can try using a very generous dose of fuel lube (like Power Service) and see if it will clear up. If not, it may be damaged or corroded and the pump may not last long. I had an IP do the same thing. It has sat unused for serveral months. The metering valve started to behave, but the IP started leaking fuel from the weep hole. I had to replace it with a rebuilt IP after that. These IP's don't like to sit dry. They corrode, the seals get dry/crack, and it really shortens their duty life.

ATF in the tanks will help too, it's full of detergents that will clean and lube all the moving parts of the pump. I use it in my tanks....about a liter per tank once a month or so
