Gonna do my first fluid and filter change on my C6.
Any advice on how much fluid to drain? Does the torque converter have a drain?
I've heard a full drain/replacement can "shock" an old tranny and do harm?
Any/all advice appreciated.

defiantly can do damage if you clutches are worn, you just need to pull the pan and filter off and what comes out comes out, measure what you took out for guideline to put back in

i always do a quart of lucas in every auto fluid change i do

notch the inlet of the filter cheap insurance

Here's one from the old easy riders tech tips.
IF you choose to flush out ALL the fluid...

After the filter change, refill the pan.
Disconnect the return line from the cooler, and channel it into a container... Fire it up and run till clear fluid comes out.
Keep the pan full.
Remember that you have the pre charged amount of atf in there to flush out.
We did this on the oil bag .

Yes a fluid change can finish off an old automatic, it’s happened to me, but an automatic transmission is just a giant pile of clutches and lasts about as long as a truck clutch on a standard trans. If the fluid change is the end of it it simply means it was going to die anyways.

The original factory C6 torque converter drain on my motorhome had a drain. It was hiding in the small hole above the one with the stud.

Having trouble finding the drain plug in the torque converter. Any advice? I’ve read allen key bolt and/or 7/16 hex bolt? Knowing what I’m fishing for/with would help.

Also what’s this notch in the filter I keep reading about?

Thanks in advance!

Mine was a normal hex head. I don't remember the size. Dunno what notch you mean.

Just keep rotating it til you see it mine was 7/16 hex
Notch in the filter if for if you accidentally get a 4x4 filter in a 2wd pan and it hits the bottom so it can’t go completely dry or you pan get smashed

Ah gotcha. Didn’t realize there was a difference in 4x4 and 2x4 filter. I have a 4x4 and I typed that in at the parts store so we’ll so how that goes…

Is there a way to rotate the torque converter/flex plate without crawling up to the cab out to crank the engine? This is killing me lol

Glad I came here. Definitely bought the 2x4 filter. Hopefully I would have noticed the different design either way but who knows. So I stole the old “straw” from my original part and ordered a new 4x4 filter. Does this cylinder just drop into the new filter and in good to go?
