Basically it's the DT466's little brother. Wet sleeves, built like a tank, just like any other IH/Navistar Engine was... even the IH Gas Engines back in the day were WAY over engineered... built like a brick ****house..... built way beefier and heavier than they needed to be... but that is part of why they lasted...

my background in diesels started in 03.
when i built a frame for a buddys 38 chevy.
in payment, i got a 01 F250 7.3.
after dealing with the powerjokes and learning them.
i started gravitating to the cheaper IDI platform.
one of my favorite engines.
as i get older, i find my needs are growing.
natural selection sent me to the DT 12V line.
i currently own 4
now i havnt finished a DT project yet,
but ive been reading up on these for about 5 years now.

i purchased the first pic. a 1989 DT360 in pieces.
bought the navi manual for it.
i was able to put it together very easily.
the manual is very well written and explains everything in detail.
i had zero issues putting it together.

the 2nd pic is a 92 DT466C i purchased it for 4500, with papered 60k on it. 270 hp model.
Allison MT643

the 3rd pic is the 94 and a 96 NGD DT 466
came factory with a P7100 bosh pump.

i was gonna rebuild the one on the right.
but i got a killer deal on the left one, with a spicer 6+1 with a .074 final.
all in running order and sounds great, $3500

you cant get a clapped out 6 BT that needs a rebuild for under 4500 here.
all these cummins freaks act like their excrement is excellent
i mean i love a mullet and pitvipers as much as the next guy... on a meme anyway, never on me

I never heard of a 360 until I bought the 86 and signed up on FTE. Then later sighed up on here.
I worked for Caltrans for 37 yrs, and in the end of 81 we got the first 2 Plow/Sander/patch trucks with the 466 and auto trans. Had those 2 for 15 yrs. Everyone drove them and abused them. (Govt). Lots of times didn`t let the turbo`s cool properly.
Both were identical, but drove different, strange.

I was hauling a load of hot asphalt for a paving job. Was a long hard pull going from Woodside up 84 to Skyling Blvd. (Hwy 35) then north and a short steep winding grade before it flattened out.
Heard this pop sound??? gauges looked ok, but when i looked in the mirror everything was buried in white smoke. Looked like one of those air show planes.
Blew the turbo. I guess the seal went and pumped oil into the hot side, melted the cast iron, and down pipe was blowing red.
opened the hood and a ball of fire going on.

Later on got a 95 with a 5 spd/2 spd air shift rear end. Ws a totally different truck. They made some improvements in the engine. Think it was 210 HP. I drove it mostly, and when I retired had 150K miles on it. Never really gave us any problems. That was the last year with the mechanical injection.
The other crew got a 96, and it had a computer on the side of the engine. it just drove different, didn`t like it. Food feed was just a switch with wires going to the comp.

When they sold the trucks, had to be sold out of state. I see a few in the Carson City area.
Over all, they are great running engines.

I drove a GMC General with an 8V92 Detroit, 13 spd. now there is an engine to shoe horn in an OBS.
That means, (for you younger guys) each cylinder is 92 cubic inches.

I had a 86 Kenworth dump truck with an 8V92Turbo and a 13 spd with 2 speed rear end. I drove it like I was racing most of the time. I loved the 2 cycle 8V92T - screaming Jimmy! Now we can't run them in Calif...

Did you slam your hand in the door before you got in, so you were mad enough to drive it...... LOL

I love 2 Stroke Detroits.... Would love one in a pickup. The township, where I grew up had an Austin-Western Road Grader that had a 3 Cylinder Detroit (either a 3-53 or 3-71). Everyone in town knew when they fired it up....

The house I grew up in was 1/4 mile from the entrance to the local elevator.. Tons of trucks and tractors went by of shapes and sized. One guy had a GMC (not a General, the Small, rounder hood) Semi with a Detroit in it. I always smiled when I heard him go by.... years later I saw this video in YouTube and it made me smile. Reminded me of sitting in my room listening to it go by....

Thanks Scott! That brought back many memories. I had forgotten how loud these 2 cycles were. Now, they sound strange since I have not heard a 2 cycle diesel in years.

Say what? I can`t hear you.
Driving one of the engines, you better have your ear plugs in or go deaf.
They call them a Sreamin Jimmie for a reason, at around 2500 RPM`s sounds like they are coming apart. But they can run Full bore all day like that, way they were built.
2 cycle engine, every down stroke is a power stroke. The valves are only exhaust valves.

We also had an Austin Western grader when I transfered to the yard up in the mountains in May 77. A 2 axle with a 4-71. had a steering wheel, and under it was a lever to steer the rear axle.

In late 81 we got a new Grader and Loader along with the 2 new dump trucks I mentioned.
A John Deer 672A Grader, it like a Cadillac compared to the AW. All wheel drive, Hydraulic motors in the front wheels , could have them 3% faster or slower than the rear wheels. Articulated, a heater that actually worked...LOL

Went from a John Deere 544 Loader to a Ford A62, what a pore exscuse for a loader. Going from a 6 cyl to a 4 banger. Stuck with it the next 13 years. Then got a Dresser (I think) a 510. all 3 had 4 in 1 buckets. That is a must on any loader.

Now retired and have my little Tinker Toy tractors in comparisson. A 84 JD 950 3 cyl Yanmar engine, Loader, back Hoe, Auger, Scraper box.

Then a week or so back neighbor gave me his Kioti CK 30, with Loader and Scraper box.
