Replaced ip cover and not sure if the gear is off a tooth or the pump is out of time I have a dti tech time 3300 unit and it was showing crazy numbers like 30° btdc and hard starts and smokes like a freight train gets better as it warms up but doesn't go away seems to have decent throttle response as well

If you have faith in your timing unit, and your ability to use it, I'd suggest actually timing the engine. 30° btdc is not a good place to be.

I don`t know what your knowledge is on your Tech-Tine 3300, but Big Bart did an excellant write up.

Very little I watched a couple videos on it seemed fairly simple and straight forward but I was mainly wondering if it would even run that far out but I think I've got the answers I was looking for I'm going to pull the front cover back off and recheck the marks

Did you maybe put it back on 180* out? It will run, but hard start and smoke like the Dickens if you did.
I lined all the marks as shown in this website https://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/en...and-crankshaft-gears-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi-engine/

so I don't think it's 180 out but definitely possible that I didn't get the ip gear in the right spot when reinstalling the ip gear cover and pump. I don't think I could get that much out of clocking the pump so I'll pull the front cover off and recheck and then go from there

The marks will line up with the IP 180 out. Make sure that your on the correct stroke.

Will these things even start & run if someone got the IP gear one tooth off while the IP gear housing was off?
Inquiring minds need to know.

Yes, but it won't be happy.
AND they will run 180* out, but be really hard to start and smoke like the Dickens! I learned this first hand, just last week....... ughhhhhhh!

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Yes, but it won't be happy.
So it not be happy one tooth off......like as in how unhappy?
Things like go ahead & start but have more rattle & cackle than before or ever heard before & bit less power? Less power taking off? Things like used to take off in 2nd A-OK but now have to take off in 1st & nearly burn clutch a bit or she will stall? Especially on a slope?

Hummmm ......I wonder if I........

@ttman4 it seems like your gears are turning here. Thinking this may be the answer to an issue your having?

The easiest way I have found to prove if the gear is off, is to turn the crank until the balancer and timing tab mark line up on two trucks and compare where the dowel pin is in the pump gear in relation to the housing. You can see a tooth or two off this way.
