Was told when I went and looked at it that it started knocking and lost oil pressure. So I when I was looking it over I gave it the crank wiggle, very distinctive clunking. So in my head I was thinking spun bearing or a rod cap came loose.

Pulled it in the shop this afternoon and dropped the oil pan down to see if I could see anything.

There wasn't anything obvious I could see. Got my youngest step son to wiggle crank pulley while holding my hand on each pair of rods, still nothing I could find wrong.

So at this point I'm kinda thinking well maybe the torque converter or flex plate is loose so I stick my hand in the starter hole expecting to find out that I dropped the pan for nothing, still nothing.

Crawl back and forth around the jack stands several more times trying to figure out WTH I was missing, notice the timing chain has a good amount of slack but decided it couldn't possibly make that kind of a clunk.

Finally got in just the right position and noticed something about the rear counter weight on crank seemed to act weird in relation to the rest of the crank.

Seems the crank is snapped in the 4-8 journal. So much for an easy fix. I will post pictures of the crank after I get the engine out and stripped.

Got the engine out and disassembled today. I can say I have never seen a completely stock ford engine break a crank.

But for the good news, the crank is the only thing damaged. The rear main bearing is pretty chewed up but didn't hurt the block. Didn't even hurt the rods on that throw.

No pictures from today but I pulled out a crank I saved from from a seized engine years ago. After several hours of cleaning and polishing I decided it was going to need turned. Everything checked out at stock so hopefully a 10 under will clean up the pitting from having set with water in the bearings before I disassembled it.

After tear down of the engine with broken crank, l believe this truck may have 132k original miles. All of the main and rod bearings were stamp with the ford logo. Mains with a date of 4-82 rods with a date of 5-82. The door sticker says truck was manufactured 5-82 .

From what I can tell when I tore it down I'm pretty sure the timing cover, and heads have never been off. Timing chain looks original and worn completely out, which i think could have possibly been what caused dhe crank failure. Water pump, valve cover gaskets have been replaced. Looks like someone attempted to re seal the oil pan in the truck with an entire tube of red silicone.

I'm going to run a hone in the cylinders and then measure to see if I can get away with oversized rings. I can still see a couple of lines from the original cross hatch in the center of bore, and almost no ring groove so hopefully I will catch a break on this thing.

Dropped off the replacement crank off at the machine shop after work today. Says it should be done Thursday or Friday. Going to order bearings and rings tomorrow so hopefully I can get the short block back together this weekend.

What I want to know is this: what was happening to the outside of the truck just before that happened inside the engine?!

That is a really good question! I had the same thoughts when I figured out how badly the kid screwed it up.

I honestly think a neglected timing chain caused it. I just would kinda like to know how tight that engine was wound up to break a crank when it jumped.

Didn't think to snap any pictures today but I got the block cleaned up today. Honed the cylinders, have a little wear at the very top of the bore but still under the wear limit so I'm gonna send it.

Got the replacement crank installed and mains torqued.

Hopefully tomorrow I can finish cleaning up the pistons, install the rings, and hopefully get them installed and rods torqued.

Not much progress but I got the timing set installed, cleaned and installed the oil sump, and started cleaning the timing cover. Probably still a couple more hours to get it clean enough to reinstall.

Engine is looking better, can't say the same for the shop floor though. I think there was an oil change worth of oil on the outside this thing.

You could send those pieces to India and they will weld it back together for ya. It will be good as new.

I think that one is going in the scrap pile. Or if i ever feel creative, maybe some artistic s*!#.

I already had another one I pulled out of a seized up engine about 20 years ago.

Love to see the old engines still being rebuilt and going back in. Everyone seems to wanna LS swap or Ford modular engine swap everything.

I grew up around chevy’s so I have a 327, 2 350’s, and a 400 all almost ready to go in something. I like seeing the old engines in the old pickups.

I absolutely hate modular motors!!! I will play with any of the conventional block engines.
Here is a couple of my sbc engines.

The complete one is out of my 84 k10 which is in a frame off restoration. It is a 350 with a way too big of cam for a lifted truck with stock gearing and 35" tires.

The painted one is planned to go in the k10, it is a .030 over 350 with vortec heads and an rv cam, planning to run factory TPI setup.

Didn't make much progress this weekend but I did get the valve covers cleaned up and painted yesterday.

Today i got one head disassembled, cleaned and checked out. Recut the valves, lapped them in and reassembled. Could have probably gotten the the other one done but the wife was complaining about how tall the grass was getting so I spent the afternoon working on the mower and mowing.

Hopefully I can get enough time after work this week to get the other head done so maybe I can get the it all buttoned up next weekend.

Had a tractor pull Saturday so I didn't make as much progress as I had hoped this weekend.

But it is getting closer. Once I get the exhaust manifolds on, the engine will be ready to go back in.

Hopefully it will be back in the truck next weekend or before.
