Dang it's nuts how location makes all the difference. I'd grab a 7.3 ZF-6 in no time if that were the case. But around here they are all 1200+. At least that I can find.

Car-part.com has good deals but even then they want $1000+ for the ZF5.
good bit of work in a zf6 swap from what i understand

I will definitely say it is a project that I don't want to do again, and I put mine in a 99 so everything was just a bolt in swap except for the floor pan.

In all honesty I hate the zf6 after the swap. Unless towing is the only thing it does it is like having to get used to drive two totally different trucks. When I'm not towing I only use 2,4,6.

There have been a couple people do it. It is not a direct bolt in, it does not use the adapter plate that is already on the IDI.... They have said for the amount of work and very little gain, it was not worth it. 1 and 6th are basically the same ratios as 1 and 5, there is just one more in the middle....

There is at least 1 thread on her about this swap... it's been a while back....

I noticed the same thing around here, everyone wants $1000 for a used zf-5 that probably needs synchros. The strange thing is I was having no trouble finding zf-6 trannys for half that.
Wow crazy... Completely the opposite here. ZF6's are huge money, and tired ZF5's are teetering on scrap if nobody claims them.

One trick I found to find good deals on a zf-5 was to search “ford 5-speed” or “ford truck transmission” rather than specifically “zf-5”.

People who know the model number tend to know that they can get $800+ out of it. People who are just parting out their truck and don’t know specific part numbers will often let it go for cheaper.
That's a good call, I've thought about doing it that way but forgot to put in the time. Thanks for the reminder!

How I've found most of my trucks over the years was by searching "Ford diesel"
