Oil cooler is reassembled. It went together with a surprising lack of effort, though it was still quite firm. I guess I used enough vaseline. I used the ratchet strap and blocks of wood method.

Quick question before I install it tomorrow (hopefully)
The gaskets I have don't have any extra sealer on them. Russrepair website (not who I bought em from) says never to put RTV on them. Ive only got RTV and Aviation Permatex.

Can I use a thin layer of Aviation permatex on both sides of the header to block gaskets? Russ recommends it on only one side and something else on the other.

Thanks and Happy Tinkering!

As I remember doing mine, I used the Aviation Permatex, (brown goopy stuff) on the smooth side. and the other side of the paper gasket has a this red rubbery like seal, that out lines the holes.
That side (as I remember) left dry.
I stuck the gasket to the headers to keep them in place while we (Wife) lined the Cooler up to the Block. Told her to just get one bolt in finger tight,
while I did the other end.
Must have worked, going on 4 years leak free.

If you want the goop on both sides, can`t see why it wouldn`t work.
When I removed the cooler, seems like it was more stick to the headers than the Block.
Maybe the factory only did one side?

UPDATE:

Engine and transmission removed. Since we can't turn the engine over we had to pull the transmission in order to pull the engine out and remove the torque converter on the ground. I decided to do main seals also so we will be doing those as well. Will post pics later. Hopefully going to put the new engine in today.

Thanks, and Happy Tinkering!

Went to put the engine in yesterday and found a decent groove in the rear sealing surface of the crank while doing the main seal and oil pan.

Also after looking at my felpro seal BS 40011 it is a dual lip design without a spring and it appears damaged so I won't be using it. I ordered the correct one but now I am looking for a 0.010 sleeve for the rear main seal. I couldn't find the right part number to just buy the sleeve.

Anybody got part numbers for a rear main sleeve compatible with standard size seals? I heard the 0.060 sleeves require certain seals...

Thanks, and Happy Tinkering!

Update:
Engine and transmission installed. Engine ran perfect out of the truck just before we installed it. Still need to hook up a few lines and put the radiator back in. Just in time, I will turn 16 next week. Wish me luck on the test!

Thanks for all your advice and help!

Ok folks, this is gonna be a sad post.

I got the truck running and driving last week, but I fell in love with my current daily driver: My dad's 1989 Toyota Pickup. You know where this is going.

I sold the ford today.

I figured for my usage, a 1984-2002 4Runner would be a better use of my time.

I simply didn't have the time or desire anymore to troubleshoot the intermittent transmission issues, the tires with flat spots, the lights that mostly function until high beam, the broken door handles, broken central locking system, Rear abs light, funky brakes, etc. The biggest lesson I learned is that the most expensive truck in the world is a free truck.

I learned a ton, and got all my money back out of it, so I can say that overall this was an amazing experience.

I still have an extra 6.9IDI and a nearly complete ATS turbo kit (no waste gate model, and missing downpipe) that I need to sell. I think it needs a rebuild but it does spin. I scrapped the junk 7.3 I pulled out of it, but I grabbed the Oil cooler, IP, and Injectors. IP is spoken for, but if anyone is interested in 7 and a half BB code used injectors as cores or something, PM me. Otherwise I will sell them to CDD. On one of them the tip got stuck and I decided it wasn't worth sacrificing a good top to remove a tip. The oil cooler is going onto the 6.9, and I will be selling this engine as well. It ran when we put it there, but I will sell it as is, as a complete engine. Everything is located in Citrus Heights, California. PM me if you are interested, I have the equipment to load the engine.

I would like to thank all the great people on this forum dedicated to keeping these old trucks alive, having fun, and sharing knowledge. You have all been great, and I hope you all continue to love wrenching on this stuff.

This will likely be the last you will see of me, as I don't have any plans to purchase an IDI or other related diesel in the near future.

Happy Wrenching!

In 10 months you covered a lot of ground, and then discovered you just turned 16. My hat is off to you, you learned a lot in a short period of time. I hope each one of us that responded to your project has some impact toward your future is what ever direction you decide to go.

Take Care.
