I am rebuilding my 89 7.3 idi along with the injection pump. I made the mistake of not marking the original position of the guide stud when I disassembled. At this point, I am not interested in turning the pump up, I just want to get it back to factory specs for the 7.3 non turbo. Any help on getting the adjustment right would be greatly appreciated.

If you didn’t mark the pump then you’re not going to know where it was. 8.5 +-2 degrees is spec.

If you removed the IP by pulling it from the gear tower you're going to have to replace it, probably lining up the factory timing marks, and then actually time the engine. Timing will require an actual diesel timing meter. Don't try timing by ear.

If you removed the IP without detaching it from the gear tower, by pulling the gear tower also, you've got a noticeably more difficult job ahead of you. If that is the case, stop and ask for detailed instructions.

I read this a little bit differently. I read this as he's rebuilding the IP (along with the engine) and has it torn apart. I'm of no use here since I've never been inside a IP nor do I have the desire to.

I need to clarify. I have rebuilt the injection pump. In doing so, I removed the guide stud without noting the original adjustment/setting. I have the pump back together, I am unsure how far back in to screw the guide stud.
