That's not a good idea. The ones for the PSD are slightly longer and it probably won't bolt to your engine. I'll bet that it's a waste of money. Not to mention that the gaskets are different too.

Ditto, X2. That is for a Power Stroke, will not fit an IDI Engine.

Only 2 things a IDI and PS have in common. Oil in Crank Case and PS Oil Filter.

I noticed the PS Oil Coolers cheaper than IDI OC`s some times. Verv inticing to buy.

Sorry, a bit confused here. The gaskets provided in the photo match up with the header pattern for the IDI’s, as seen here:

the description in the listing is a all over the place though. it says it’s for a “powerstroke” yet lists IDI engine years 1986-1994.

Is there a difference in the cooler for the 83-85 compared to the 86-94? Figured the idi would all be the same dimension wise. I have done a few obs and super duty powerstroke but so far haven't had a leaker on the idi. I figured the powerstroke could be different since it is a totally different platform.

It also clearly says that it's not compatible with a 1989 F250 even though it's included in the years listed. From my past experiences, if the listing contradicts itself, run far, far away from that product. If it can't be l described properly, what are they really selling?

My guess is that the difference isn't in the cooler/tube/bundle itself, but in the end caps. The early ones used two small o rings and one large one in each cap instead of two large ones like the later ones did. I believe that the cooler will work for all years.

Are you meaning just the idi, or does that include the powerstroke? I have numerous idi and powerstroke trucks ranging from 83 through 01 but I have never really compared the coolers. I know they look similar in design.

Thanks for any info. I am always looking to learn something new.

Are you meaning just the idi,
Just the IDI. I found out that the PSD cooler is longer when I was working on these for a living. The boss drove a 99 PSD. It started getting oil into the cooling system so the caps were put onto another cooler so it would have a clean one to start out with. It still kept getting oil into the cooling system so I got to change out the engine twice. Then the shop manager checked the length of the PSD cooler against the length of one for an IDI and the IDI one was shorter. I put the end caps back onto the PSD cooler and that stopped the oil in the cooling system problem. The end caps from either engine will fit onto the cooler from the other engine, but the IDI cooler won't keep the oil out of the PSD cooling system and that means that the PSD cooler probably won't bolt onto a IDI engine because the mounting holes in the end caps won't line up with the holes on the IDI block. You could probably bolt one cap to the engine, but not the other one. I believe that someone confirmed this by trying it, but I can't remember who it was.

Than you for the clarification. Just looking at them I would have never thought there was a difference. If I would have tried to swap them I would have probably noticed the difference. Could save me a headache if I didn't notice though.

Thanks for the input & took your advice to heed extreme caution, so I cancelled the order.

Has anyone had success with the Dorman oil coolers available from rock auto for $298?

I know it’s Dorman(->Chinese), and that their motto is “why do the job once when you can do it twice?”

I’m not sure if it’s the oil cooler that has failed, and I’m at the “throw parts at the motor until the problem stops” phase.

My only thoughts are but a new/reman oil cooler, then try the valley pan+cdr valve throat gasket, and then the head gaskets last…

The distilled water in the radiator appears to definitely have oil mixing with the coolant.

Have you made sure that the water pump plate isnt leaking coolant into the block?
I was just scanning back through the thread to see if I had missed anything that may be of use and found this question that seems to have gotten missed. This could definitely be a possibility for the water in the oil. The slight bit of oil I see in the coolant could have gotten into water passage when the cooler was unbolted.

Yes, good catch because I missed this.

Sorry if there is an obvious answer to this question but I’m not a mechanic and still learning. So to check this, Is the recommended method here is to ensure the water pump plate isn’t leaking coolant into by removing the water pump and then make sure both surfaces are clean and put a new gasket and/or blue RTV on the mating surface?

Can I tell if this is a problem without removing the pump?
