7.3 build continues - got the crank in with no issues. Endplay of .005". Main bearings at .002". But now it's time to install the piston rings, and the oil rings are new to me.

Is there a trick to install them? From what I can tell, the expander type deal fits behind the ring, and it's got green paint on it, so that's the part that must face the oil ring gap, right? Do you install the expander first and then put the ring over it or should I do both at the same time?

I'm using Total Seal rings. Standard bore NA 7.3 pistons (original).

Thanks

I’ve put pistons in for “core” but you don’t really need to be careful for that and I’ve thought to myself, man for the price of the gapless rings I’m going to need to figure out how to be more precise one day

You’ll figure it out.. it just an engine. Why not call Justin? I assume you got the rings from him. I don’t think you are going to find the answer here.

Not sure the terminology you're using.

The oil rings I used had 3 pieces, a ring, a wire, and a spring.

Wire is centered inside the gap of the spring, then placed on the piston. Then the ring is placed on the piston outside the spring, with the gaps 180° opposite of one another.

I didn't really see any part in your video about rings.

No real trick to it, just pay close attention to orientation. Some rings (most often the top compression rings) have a chamfer that needs to be orientated correctly. Pay close attention to the the instructions. I have never used a ring expander myself. I just slide the rings over the pistons and let them drop into the groove. I have built dozens of engines, and probably only ever broke one or two rings. Well callused thumbs make it a bit easier, as the rings do have sharp edges.

Make sure to put the rings into the bore first and check the end gap. File as required.
