Boom, I got myself my first set of coked up injectors, I was warned by you guys, annnd I still haven’t set up twin tank. Just the time is only excuse as it’s my daily driver also, I see different injectors being offered for 7.3 idi for WVO, is there better injectors for WMO? Are turbo spec injectors better with there higher output?? (I’m running standard in NA motor) obviously twin tanks and preheated oil are a must here for me n it’s all happening any weekend soon,
All 8 were blocked and they cleaned up easy, Ute has plenty more power now and is not smoking anymore,

I run heavy as much as I can to keep the injectors clean and keep the engine working hard. Single tank all stock. Decent success. Would like to do dual tank and heater. Might look into water methanol injection. There is talk that would help clean the coke off of a di ingine but not sure about idi's. If I am idling I run it up to 1k rpms so the egts get a little hotter too. Other then that I don't really idle much.

A once a month blow out is a good idea, by that I mean pulling a trailer or some hard driving up hills for several miles. I get hay once a month and that's when my injectors get cleaned. I really doubt you need different injectors, but as I mention, this is a science experiment so if you got the "coin" experiment away and let us know what you find.

So if running hotter n harder is the best way too keep coking off injectors why is and IDI preferred to a DI engine as I would have thought exposing the injectors to direct combustion is going to give them a better chance of staying clean, and then the water injection would def be of some Benifit,
Obviously best thing is to pre-heat the WMO mix before it hits the engine to get it to act more like diesel, and a twin tank system well makes sense,

I never found a way to keep them from doing that. I tried water injection, didnt really seem to help. Found a long screw works best to clean that out.

This is why I quit burning wmo (50/50) in the 6.2/6.5. I did try a few different injectors, but really no difference in how long it took until I had to pull and clean them.

Those are some coked up injectors. I ran WVO in my 6.2 for years and never had that much coke. (I only briefly ran wmo ) The different injectors in the 7.3 are for NA versus turbo, the pop pressure is higher. You could rebuild them and add shim washers but they have to be “balanced” pretty well. I get the oil as hot as possible before it goes to the injectors “many methods”. And for that reason a two tank system is really needed to get everything hot before introducing thicker feedstock.
I wouldn’t run any WVO /WMO in a direct injected engine they have tiny ports that get clogged easily and start ******* fuel, washing down and into the oil.

Top the shims for the injectors (used) below a new one.
I just open and clean them every 2.5 - 5k miles. 1h job, so far so good.

A DI injector usually has 4-8 holes and a specific spray angle into the piston bowl. This is easier to foul than a IDI injector, which is one solid stream that burns in the pre-cup.

Just curious but how are you processing your wmo?
