And the answer is zd9s,lol.
So I bought these motor craft zd29s by mistake from Rock Auto. I thought they were 9s. I figured I'd try them anyway.
On my way home today, and it was like deja Vu with the 5.4.
I couldn't believe it.
So I say all this to warn you against 29s.

I also have no clue if the gp tip made it out or not, but it runs perfect.

General consensus I've seen is the ZD29 is the new replacement part number for the ZD9. I hope that's not true if this is the quality of them!

@Farmer Rock Do they say Beru or anything on them???
That's the kicker, in the add they had Beru engraved just like a zd9, then they got here and had no writing. My guess is they used the zd9 picture in the add, and sent me china crap. I'm surprised, I've always had good experiences with Rock Auto, but we will see what they have to say, you can be darn sure..

When I did GPs in my 7.3 the ZD29s I bought from RA came in a Ford Motorcraft bag and had the appropriate labels on it. I vote for wrong item sent. What did the packaging say?

Seems like there was a thread on the ZD-29 plugs.
From what I remember, the dealer sells them 2 to a bag, and call them 29`s.
No first hand info though.

I`ll see if i can find that thread.

Edit:

Google search and ye shall find.

Can you pull one of the undamaged ones so we can have a good look at it? I have always trusted parts from Rockauto to not be counterfeit, but now you’ve got me worried.

I don't see beru anywhere on that plug, kind of disconcerting, but it is what it is in this day and age. Preventing counterfeiting is super hard. Plenty of videos on youtube showing motorcraft parts side by side, one being counterfeit the other not. If you don't know what to look for, you won't tell a difference. I'd say only to trust the dealer or a reputable parts store, and even then inspect them thoroughly, as someone can purchase 2 sets and return the cheaper set to the dealer for a refund. Would the parts counterman be good enough to catch it? Probably not.

I know they aren't Beru plugs, that's kind of the point here.
Whether or not Beru plugs is what showed up isn't the question, I already know they aren't. The point is that they were advertising them that way. And this was Rock Auto surprisingly enough. Amazon or eBay I would believe, but not Rock Auto. That's why I'm stumped.
The point is, I've bought probably half a dozen sets of zd9s off Rock Auto in the past two years without issue. Yet the 29s are complete junk.
Only reason I even put them in, was because I'm daily driving this truck and need to be able to start it while I wait for the zd9s.

I bought 4 of the zd29 from rock auto I installed 3 of them over a month ago and they seem to be fine. They say zd29 and e2510061143 10.5v. They do not say beru on them. I guess I'll see how long they last. The truck starts great no problems. 2 years ago I replaced 4 on the driver side because they quit working. They were Bosch. The replacements are Motorcraft from rock auto and they say beru on them.

I had a bad experience with a counterfeit plug… which required the ”open the exhaust valve” method to get the tip out. Given length of the tip broken off - I’ll bet it is still in the cup cross wise and did not fall into the cyl - YET.

Subsequently, I bought quite a few Beru Plugs from various places… most were not OEMs from even reputable companies. The best - was ZD9’s in perfectly marked ZD1 bags (including the punch hole in the bag). There are several good threads on this problem, including photos.

Not trying to demean any vendor, but I think the time to assume there is a vendor who can consistently supply GPs - is in the past. I just assume I’m going to get some bad ones, so a really good physical inspection and some bench testing is in order… My advice is to be proactive and start the journey for GPs long before you need them,..

I just looked up these plugs through my supplier, they have been showing the zd9 and zd29 for a while now, and the 29 was just a package with 2 zd9s.

Looking them up this morning, all they show is the zd29, which wouldnt be concerning based on the fact that I have only been able to get 7.3Ps beru plugs in the 2 pack from them for a while, but................they are half the price that they used to be. I will order some and report back.

The other thing that concerns me is that the store, and every one of their warehouses have more of them in stock than I ever remember seeing......
