So I ordered glow plugs from accuratediesel. Stupid of me. They sent DieselRx plugs. I installed them and they worked for half a day before they all burnt out.

Bought some motor craft plugs to replace them with but none of them will come out. They are all ballooned at the end.

Also, I’m certain my glow plug relay didn’t burn them out. That relay did not stay on for more than 8 seconds.

Any tips on getting these out? I’m afraid I might be pulling the motor.

Check this out:

I haven't needed it yet, but if I have the misfortune to purchase an engine with stuck glow plugs that's what I'd get.

Don't forget to use PB blaster, or wd-40 at minimum.

I had success getting them out after a lot of aggravation. I welded a pair of needle nose vice grips to a slide hammer attachment and was able to get them out.

The ones I could t access with that tool I used vise grips and a pry bar. Fortunately I didn’t break any.

I cold started and it started up beautifully with the new motorcraft ZD-29 plugs I put in. Hopefully those last more than 1 day! Lol I don’t want to have to do that again for awhile.

so don’t buy any plugs other than motorcraft to whoever is reading this. I cannot freaking believe those dieselrx plugs lasted like 2 starts and then completely burnt out and open circuited and mushroomed and gave me a hell of a time getting them out.

I pull the glowplugs when I see them on JY trucks so I have spares. I hook them up to a battery and check the glow pattern as well as how long it takes to get cherry red, then keep the matched sets in the parts bin. The DieselRX ones are garbage, they only get red at the tip, not the whole plug. I'll keep them for using as woodburning tips, I'll never stick them in my truck. In a few days I can post pictures of the difference between Motorcraft and DieselRX plugs.

That would be pretty cool to see the difference. Learned my lesson anyway. I don’t care so much about the $100 I paid for them, but my free time is rare so I don’t want to waste the time to install something that doesn’t work and then have a hell of time getting these faulty plugs out of my truck.

Make sure you let the vendor know as they think those are the best ever. And when they tell them you did something wrong, which is their standard answer, get firm with them if you want. I cant say here what I told them
Offered to send another set, I told them where they belong.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Yeah bout 12-15 yr ago I got good EBay glowplug deal. Can't go wrong on good deals, RIGHT???? LOL
Stuck them in my '92 NA. Well they burned up, swelled up, quit.
Went to take them out & 4-5 of them broke off down at threads. I spent 2 days VERY carefully drilling them out, smallest bit, then bigger bit, then bigger bit, LOTS of bad words! Finally got 2 of them out & clean.

"HINDSIGHT" is title of my book I'm writing.....

Next time you are attempting to pull a stuck glow plug make sure you put that cylinder to top dead center. That way if the plug does break off its in the precup and doesn't fall down into the cylinder. They can be removed after they break off through the injector hole.

Also if you are going to buy online don't buy from amazon or ebay. There are people out there selling counterfeit motorcraft parts on both sites. Amazons own warehouses are distributing counterfeit parts and they know about it but continue to let it happen.

Wow you were right… they have come to the conclusion that it is most definitely my fault that they all failed. They said I must have used a boost charger for them to all die at the same time.

I didn’t use any charger since my batteries are like new. But that’s good to know that a slightly higher voltage can destroy the plugs.

One thing I noticed was that the DieselRx plugs were all around 0.7 - 0.8 ohms (including my fluke lead resistance) whereas the Beru ones were like 1.0 - 1.1 ohms.

Pretty big difference in current draw there.

That's crazy they were trying to blame you, but at least you got them out without disassembling the engine.

FWIW, those battery boost chargers would never be able to start one of our IDIs. I tried to use one to start my classic Oldsmobile and it was a no-go. All that happened was the charger was quickly drained. Jeez...

I have use by battery booster to help start my truck when my old batteries were getting weak. But it will not start the truck when the batteries were compleatley dead.

I've tried jumping mine with a booster, another vehicle, and a 120v charger that has a START button.
None of them seemed to do anything. I had to recharge the batteries. They are both fairly new Motorcraft and in good condition.
This was after trying to start in -15F after forgetting to plug in my block heater. I drained them.

Which battery do you connect a jumper to? Or does it not matter?

The passenger's battery. It is closer to the starter solenoid.

Below zero temps will really make any weakness in your trucks starting system show. When I lived in Minnesota I had to add battery blankets in addition to the block heater to make my truck easy to start when it got below zero. The battery blankets made the biggest improvement to my starting the truck and the longevity of the batteries.
