Fellas - I'm about to start reassembling my 7.3 this weekend. Are there any specialty tools needed other than the obvious stuff? I have valvespring compressors, micrometers, piston ring compressors, torque wrenches, plastigage, etc. Just wondering about any IDI specific stuff, like oil seal installer and such.

Thanks,

Scott

Make sure you have good piston ring compressor and not the flimsy one from the parts store. Tools to install front and rear seal helps but can be done with a block of wood. Finally, a tool to press the harmonic balancer back on without damaging it.

I do have a good ring compressor and plenty of blocks of wood! I have a balancer tool as well.

Thanks

I doubt anyone on this thread currently needs the info, but it might be helpful for anyone searching for specialty tools in the future.

Most all can still be found through a good google search, they are pricy but at least still out there.

I have a few freeze plug installers left for the factory style freeze plugs if you use those.
I made a batch of them several years ago because there was a demand.

I have a couple of the tools

T83T 6701 A Rear Crankshaft Seal Replacer
T83T 6312 B Water Pump Nut Wrench
T83T 9527 A Nozzle Seat Cleaner

They are quite expensive. The Rotunda kits come up on E-Bay all the time, and some parts are missing. I think mechanics that have them, piece them out and sell separately and can make more money on them.

I wanted the nozzle seat cleaner, and it was always over $100. Kept watch, and sometimes the seller drops the price, and got it for $75, and free shipping. Said used, but was brand new.

Old Bull who has passed away, has the blue prints posted to make the Freeze Plug tool.

Specialty tool are important to have for that one time use. Then they take up room in the tool box of specialty tools.
But I would rather have it and not use it than need it and not have it.

I have mentioned the nozzle seat cutter before, and never any feed back on them. it is important to have that seat clean and flat for the (new) Copper Washer to seal properly to keep the combustion pressure from seeping past up towards the Injector.
I have seen Injectors guys have posted that are so caked with carbon etc,,, they hardly come out.

I have read to use a Shot Gun bore cleaning brush etc.. to clean it out, maybe the threads.

Bought the 86 10 years ago and 153K miles, now up to 345K. and not sure how long they were in before I bought it.
Wonder what lurkith down inside that Injector to cause me problems?

Then you will need something like this if stick or come apart.

Unfortunately, i don't have a cleaner photo. Its actually something i came across on the internet after extensive searching. I kept a copy for my own record then came across this thread and thought it might be helpful to others.
