Not my listing but thought I would share. I remember these coming up in discussion a long time ago but they seem to be pretty rare.

The ad appears recent but I've seen it on local craigslist for a few months now. It seems nobody wants them (especially at that $$$).

Interesting, seems pretty high priced though. I paid $650 for a 7.3l IDIT from a salvage yard a few years ago. Are the marine diesels that much better than the ones available in trucks? Of course, I bought mine as a core that needed a rebuild, but that post says it needs head gaskets.

I think the seller is comparing it to other "marine" diesel engines and basing the price on that. Two rebuildable cores for $2200 CAD seems a bit high but maybe the coolers and turbos make up for it. Personally, I hate V-block engines in boats. Inlines are almost always easier to service. And we're honest, that applies to trucks too.

Did those engines use a raw water cooling system? If so that'd be almost a guarantee for cavitation wouldn't it?

Wondered about cavitation also.....

That oil filter adapter is interesting.

Looks like a Hodge Podge pile of parts, well preserved and packaged for sale.

Take away the few pieces that make it a Marine Engine, it`s just a couple 7.3 Engines taken apart thrown in a pile.
Looks like a couple Power Steering Pumps thrown in there also.

Hard to tell by a picture what`s good from bad.

The Marine parts may be rare and IDI specific, but finding the guy that wants to build up an engine for a boat is slim.

Only thing else that may be different is the cam profile, and maybe the fuel pump, since they're more designed to run at one speed for a set amount of time, otherwise rest of block should be the same.

If I had a stupid amount of money I'd toy around with it as a hobby. But I'm fine with the boat engine I have now.

If it's cavitated can that be repaired with sleeves, or does that junk the engine? Machine work isn't cheap these days, and it might be difficult to find a machinist willing to work on an IDI let alone a marine engine.

If it's cavitated in the cylinders it should be able to be repaired with sleeves. But that doesn't make the rest of the block suitable, so inspect it thoroughly before boring for the sleeves.
