Been looking at a few things for Loss Prevention/tracking. I figure one of the best ways to prevent the loss is to stop it before it begins.

I will not prevent the engine from cranking but to prevent it from starting for the average individual. Some people might get energetic enough to stick in a ~worn~ key and try turning the ~worn~ ignition switch. Others might rip out the ign switch and get the steering lock released and then get it cranking to start. I figure to at least allow it to crank. However if there is no power going to the FSS (Fuel Shutoff Solenoid) to open it, it will not start. The individuals can crank it and it won't start.

How many people, in the heat of the moment, will attempt to diagnose a no start situation? This is about all I have to say on this subject. I now need to build the switch to control this system not to mention tapping into the wiring harness away from the obvious bottom of the steering column at the starter switch.

Had a early 90s nissan hardbody that was stolen a couple times, both times think it was left unlocked. It also had a window smashed when the doors were locked so..

Least the IDIs have different door/ignition keys for what little that does.
for diesel engines I'll often idle while running errands or whatever and either just lock the doors or put a wheelbar lock on too, comprehensive insurance helps as well..

just unhooking negative battery terminals and using a wheel lock is probably enough to deter 99% of thefts, nothing is gonna be perfect is someone is motivated

Got lucky one night, living on 40th and Stoneway in Seattle, left my wagon unlocked by accident. Came out to an open car door. Everything was left in the car except my roll of quarters.

That was prolly a “user” looking for a quick fix vs a thief.

The FSS, coupled with the club, monkey thing, wheel lock, and you’re bound to keep yourself from driving your pickup.

If you have an electric fuel pump, a very simple toggle switch on the pump could be all you need. If you wanted to get fancy, a proximity switch.

push button start, manual glowplugs, e pump on switch, everything else on ignition, you can put the fss on a hidden switch. I put a fuel injector GM car on a hidden switch before that cut injectors.

At that point if you can figure out how to start it, enjoy.

Proximity switch to the fuel pump might be a future option. My current approach is a switch in plain sight that can also be removed upon leaving the vehicle. Simplicity is a good thing. The only way a tracker might come into need is either for a smart bandit who knows to listen for the click of the VSS and how to bypass if needed or the better bandit with a tow truck. Yes, it is impressive to see an unmarked tow truck towing a 'higher end' vehicle down the road with the alarm going off non stop.
Staying out of Portland is another good idea.

manual glowplugs will stop anyone really, unless an IDI person is hunting for IDIs but my guess is if it’s being stolen it’s cause they think it is an “OBS” which goes for $$. At that point you’d just lift it with a wrecker like someone said and that’s that.

When you say the think it’s an OBS..aren’t they? Or does that refer to PSD obs

Do people seriously just steal vehicles with wreckers now? Or is that the repo guy?

The average person tends to refer to aeronose PSDs as OBS

Bricknose, bullnose etc not common

Although, when I was in the junkyard last and at a truck event I heard highschool age guys calling bricknoses square body fords which is interesting

I’ve got my glow plugs on a manual switch a four speed and and switch on the clutch safety if I’m in a real sketchy area so I don’t have a lick of concern if they try and crank it and it won’t go it’s just too much noise and attention than your average thief will want but of course you have you not average theirs who are just bound and determined and nothing will stop them no matter what you do and you just can’t stop them

This is one thing I just don't put alot of effort into worrying about. No reason to live in fear of things I can't control. Plus, I have two sticks in mine, and I have a tendency to leave it in "double neutral". Most of today's teenage joyriders don't have a chance in hell of figuring that one out.

As an example of the intelligence of today's car thief's, a coworkers 6.0 Powerstroke was parked at a local repair shop, waiting for a new motor (insert 6.0 jokes here). A rather entrepreneurial young lad thought that F250 would make a quick score, so he busted out the side glass, and tore the column and dash apart trying to hot wire it before he realized that the truck wasn't just lifted in the front, it actually had no motor. Of course this entire episode was caught on surveillance camera, as is the way of today's world. You can't control stupidity.....
