Have a 1993 f250 xlt 7.3 non turbo

Recently my a/c had a massive leak due to hose hanging too low on my intake and it burnt/melted through the hose. Wasn’t too concerned about it as don’t use the ac much and figured I’d fix it next summer until I started getting a nasty squealing and burning rubber or plastic smell. Pulled over off highway and there was smoke and some kind melting substance dripping out of and around ac compressor. I’d like to just replace the compressor, bolt it on without hooking up hoses or charging a/c and let it run as an idler pulley basically until I can get a shop to charge it properly form me. My question is, would this just be ruining another compressor?

I’ve also read that you can get a shorter belt and bypass condenser but I can’t figure a way to run it besides putting the belt on the other, top side of the vacuum pump. If any of all have done this before could you let me know how you ran the belt?

I think this happened because I was using the defrost with heat on and I wasn’t aware that utilizes the condenser/ac clutch.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks y’all.

As long as you don't hook anything up to the compressor you should be ok. Tape off the wires and leave the factory plugs in place. It would not be my first choice, but you should be ok.

As long as the clutch is disengaged the pulley is just spinning on a bearing and nothing internal is turning, hence me saying tape off the plugs and leave them disconnected.

You're better off just replacing the bearing on your current one for now if it's a project you're able to do yourself.

Actually, you can get an idler from autozone and it bolts in place of the compressor. Our 92 locked up, so we bought the idler, unbolted and strapped up the compressor and ran with it.

On the vacuum pump, it will work on either side. I had a belt that was a bit too short, but needed the truck. So I ran it over the top and it worked fine. We even had a member drive all the way across the country with it over the top. It’s a diaphragm pump and will work either direction….

@chillman88 Thank you for the reply. Definitely not ideal but I’d like to keep it running if I can and get new line set up and mounted properly before taking it into the shop for hopefully only a few hours.

@snicklas Thank you as well. I’ve got a belt already that should fit that route and I’ll try it out tomorrow.
