6.9 can use zd1. The zd28 is used in Kubotas. They also don’t look like they’re getting that hot. A lot of buildup on tip that heats.

Well, I say that because you know how sometimes with ford there's the "left over parts" that can get used up at the beginning of production.

My 87 6.9 also has the Wavy controller and bullet style glow plugs. I feel like for AZ running the glow plugs manually for 10 seconds might be excessive. Mine usually cycle for about 3-5 max. Mind you it just started to be "cool" here (80 degrees) so it's possible the cycle time will increase as the temp drops. Also my battery's are sh** as well as my battery cables...

I'm not sure what all the talk about the wavy metal deal is about, many of us don't even have one and run only the relay to activate the GP's.
I'm pretty sure it's a way for the controller to monitor amperage, which makes it a shunt and not a resistor. Never seen a resistor like that but I'm no electrical engineer.

I would hook up a 12v battery to a plug or 3 and see if they glow! They look very clean and undamaged. If they glow you are chasing the rabbit down the wrong hole.

Your switch is wired up to be the ground for the trigger side of the relay, right? So if it was shorting out or the switch was triggering you'd be having dead batteries, etc, which is obvious.
Vs if you wired the GP switch to send power, specifically switched power, it would run while driving but never while the key was off.

Another way to troubleshoot that system is to wire up a light that triggers when the GP relay has power. Then you'd notice it coming on while driving, etc.

I do have it powering the realy as contriling the ground side would be hard as it grounds theough the mount. I am planning to wire a light on the dash to watch

It's been so long since I wired mine I can't remember how it's done, so to be fair I could have been talking out of my bum there... didn't think of that till you mentioned it. But there was a great picture floating around here and FTE about properly wiring it up. Hopefully you followed that and it's all good.

It'll be interesting to know what the light does and if those plugs are still good or no.

For some reason I got 87 stuck in my brain, and they're selling you the wrong plugs I think. In all the GP threads on here I haven't seen ZD-28, it would have come up.

Does the 6.9 have some kind of voltage reducer like the squilggly thing on a 7.3?
The Z Resistor is NOT a voltage reducer. The 7.3 controller measures current across this resistor to determine how hot the plugs are. The 6.9 and 7.3 systems both supply full battery power to the plugs. With them all running, we see 9-10 volts due to current draw.

The difference in the controllers between the two, the 6.9 only references coolant temp (which is why it’s screwed into the head. If/when they fail, they normally fail on, and burn the plugs to death. The 7.3 references current, and it fails “safe” (the short glow cycle with bad plugs)…

The only real difference Ican tell in the 2 types of glow plugs is the connector. The ZD-1 (6.9) has a spade connector, and the ZD-9 (7.3) has the bullet connector.

My oem supplier shows both part numbers zd1 and now zd28 as interchanging, no other footnotes......but neither plug says anything ZD on it, and both say beru in the first position of the lettering.

Something is fishy with those plugs of yours. And i need to do some research on this new zd28 thing?

And if you dont mind changing your connector to the glow plug, the bosch 80034 is a much better plug for manual control. I have been using them for pretty close to 15 years now with no failures. I ALWAYS put them in anything that has a button for glow plugs.
