Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Hey I installed a $33 Delphi pump from NAPA and it’s definitely drawing fuel from the gas tank much easier. The old pump is certainly bad.

I’ve got fuel out of the filtered side of the fuel strainer that goes down to the injection pump. Right now I am not getting fuel to the injectors. I Tested that the IP fuel shut off solenoid is working as it should by turning the key to the “on” position, and I can hear the terminal click off and on when I remove and reattached the harness.

The top of the injector pump is warmer than the engine to the touch.

I forgot to mention that I cranked and cranked with the accelerator pedal all the way down to the floor. Probably in total 2 minutes of cranking and was not getting fuel out of the injector lines.

My next step is to verify that fuel is actually coming out of the pump. I’ll take one of the upper, easiest to get at lines off of the back of the pump and see if any fuel comes out while the engine is being cranked over.

I’ll do that after I figure out if I just burnt up a starter solenoid.

Just remember that you aren't going to get a large volume of fuel when you do this.
Thank you. What I’ll be looking for is pressurized fuel, any fuel, leaving the injector pump. It won’t be a lot.

Doing some reading from this thread it looks like even though the fuel shut off solenoid will audibly click on and off, the internal mechanism that lives under the injector pump “hat” can stick. And that hitting it with a rubber mallet could help to unstick it.

I swapped in a new starter solenoid and no luck. I’m going to bench test both of them and see about a replacement solenoid tomorrow.

In the mean time I found that there’s a reman pump on the truck.

I found what looks like an original stanadyne db2-4821 pump in a pile of parts. Maybe I’ll get lucky by having a working stanadyne pump instead of these reman units that are prone to early failure

If it turns out the current reman pump that’s on the truck is bad, I think I’d like to try one of these $50 DB2 pump rebuild kits and rebuild it.

Do all of the injector pumps come with badging that read “REMANUFACTURED”? Or do the pumps that come from the “Big 4” (Russ, Wes, Justin from R&D, etc) ship IP’s with their own custom badge plate?

I don't know ANYTHING about it, but I'm totally going to rebuild my own IP! Good luck, and keep us informed.

You’re right, it wasn’t a large volume of fuel at all.

Problem is, when I was bleeding the injector lines, I was seeing very rust colored diesel fuel bubbling out of the nuts.

So, the injector lines have rust getting picked up by the diesel and I don’t want that rust gumming up the injectors. So I’m removing the injector lines again, gonna soak in diesel overnight, and then blow compressed air through in hopes to blow the rust out of the lines.

That's a good idea. If there's rust underneath the nut on top of the injector, the rust color could be coming from there, but it's still better to be safe.

While I wait for these to clean up, I’ll need to hook the glow plug system up.

On a whim, I decided to plug in the engine block heater to see if it works. After a few hours i felt around the block to see if anything was warming up. I didn’t feel any heat, and the laser temp gun didn’t find any heat either.

I’ll want to troubleshoot what’s going on with the block heater, but for now I’m going to focus on the glow plug controller, running a new wiring loom, and then getting the injector lines back on.

Stay tuned for tomorrow, maybe I’ll have the truck running

Yeah, that's a regular alternator. The solenoid on the side wall is for the starter, the one above the tire is for the glow plugs. I thought it looked like you had the solid state controller but it looks like you have the old style glow plug system like is supposed to be there. It really sucks cleaning up wires!
Found a new solid state controller complete with the pedestal - that’ll be a tomorrow job to test the unit and see if it works

If your block heater is working, you'll hear it sizzling down there.

Hmmm... Can I have that diesel when you're done? We're at a lovely $6.19 over here. Filled my tdi up and it was a cool $105 today :cool:
