I'm going to change the gear oil in my rear end tomorrow, but I need to know the fluid capacity of it before I start. How many quarts do I need? I'm probably going to go with Royal Purple. What's better, the 80/90 or 75/140 weight?

Thanks,

IIRC you need 8.5 pints for the rear end.

When the detroit locker was installed I wanted to go with royle purple or Red Line. However, after exchanging e-mails with **** Cepek (who installed the locker) I went with Lucas heavy duty 80/90 plus & have not had any problems at all.

I've got the factory (un)limited slip in my truck. Does the Lucas stuff have the friciotn modifier in it already? I can't say I've ever noticed the Lucas but I'll have to look. I know I can get the RP at NAPA and that's the main reason I am going with it. I put it in my Dodge when I change it out and had pretty good results from it.

Thanks fellas.

I really don't remember if it had any "whale *****" in it or if it needed to be added.

I know a few guys who ran/run RP oil in diesels & they have had mixed results. Never tried their products as I personally prefer Red Line if going that route. However, all I now run in the PSD is Rotella T dino.

Rear Dif

I use Amsoil Severe Duty 75/140 in both front and rear dif's. I have yet to get any chatter using this gear lube. Hope this helps.

find the axle tag, should be located on one of the bolts on the diff cover. If it says 355 or 410 with an LS after it, then you have a limited slip differential and need the modifier. However, chances are that the LS clutches are long gone for this world if original.

You can also locate the axle code on the door sticker and do a google search to find your axle gearing and whether it is limited slip or not
