Can you notice a difference in the braking with the new pump or is it basically the same? I imagine the trans shifting is the main reason behind the pump replacement but I'm glad to hear it's better and not worse than before.

I didn't go drive it so I can't say how it's acting yet for sure but brake pedal seemed ok, I reckon. But the old worn out pump that was messing with the C6 still had good braking. I guess the brakes were sucking up all the vacuum. Definitely a better reading on both gauges so it's a step in the right direction.

Dunno. I didn't notice any leaking out when I had the rubber cap removed from the barb. I didn't add any to the old Dorman and it lasted 5 years, but maybe it had oil? Where would you add oil? And what kind?

The Amazon Dorman didn't have any instructions. The Walmart Cardone one came with a ton of instructions for various types of driven vac pumps (belt, cam, gear) which all just amount to saying to move the old one and install the new one.

From what I remember, there is a plug (looks like a bolt) on the back side of the pump. There shouldn’t be any oil in the suction side, that would come out of the port. This would be on the other side of the diaphragm to lube the bearings and the diaphragm to drive interface. I’ll have to do some searching.. there are a few posts on here that mention it…

What transmission? C6 needs a certain amount of vacuum or it'll act up. My vacuum pump started getting weak right after a C6 rebuild, making it act up a little (late 3rd upshifting, noticable downshift when braking).

If you have a manual transmission, I don't think vacuum matters. If the braking is working and you don't have a C6, you might just run it.
Curiosity, would vacuum affect an e4od?

The tach sensor DOES mess with E4OD though, unlike with C6 that doesn't even need the sensor. Vans couldn't have tachs (no gauge for it. edit: until 1992) so my 85 E350 just has the tach port sensor plugged. My 87 F250's sensor is messed up but it's also C6 so it doesn't matter.

An update on that Cardone 90-1006: it died after ~2,500 miles. A piece even fell off during use. Total junk pump. Box brags that it's "100% new"

And the Walmart return window closed 6 days ago. I wish I was kidding. I'll see if a Walmart store manager will override it, since they have the power to authorize it. I have the box still, so they might do it.

I took an exit to check the tow bar etc on the bug, and on an uphill ramp I found I was lacking braking. Went on the nearby truck stop and yeah very poor braking.

And my vac gauge didn't clue me in, because it had built up pressure when driving down the highway. After I stopped and then thought to look, I found...

It must have failed when going through Vegas. It was fine 30 miles before Vegas this morning when I fueled up, and at the southeast end (Railroad pass travel center) it was bad (about 70 miles).

Thankfully I had the new Dorman from O'Reilly's, the free warranty replacement for the one that got weak after 5 years/25-30k miles (but less weak than the cardone after 2 weeks use/2.5k miles!) so I only had to dig out a few tools and I was able to immediately replace it.

Walmart is awful in so many ways, but returns aren't one of them. They took back the junk pump, via fedex. Just had to stop, box it up, print a label, and drop it off. The return desk couldn't override it, corp customer service had to allow it. So, I'm not out $80 for a junk pump. Lesson? Only buy expensive ($150) lifetime warranty ones.
