Yeah I am not a welder, but I assume expansion and contraction is the point of the slip joint. That is why @IDIoit uses a bellowed section. I just have talked with the guys at CDD to see if they had a product to fix this problematic joint and they said they have just welded them up in the past without issue. :dunno

Hopefully this Deacon stuff works well. did you have to clean the joint real well?
Yes, I wire wheeled inside and out, then sprayed a bit of phosphoric acid up in there to address the rust; then rinse that out and wipe it all clean with acetone prior to applying the 8875-Thin. The Thin is very thick and sticks well. Used rubber gloves to spread it around the inside of the upper pipe and put a thick coat on the lower.

I also had a minor leak on my passenger side manifold:

I have not been able to drive it yet for 2 reasons. One is that I got a case of “while I’m at its” and tore a few things apart. Then my irrigation line decided to rupture and that work sadly took priority over the truck.
Hopefully I can get it back together in the next few days after work.

Took the truck around the block. Now hitting 8.4psi, so better. The real story is how quickly it more builds boost and its at much lower rpm; before it was only boosting at 2000 rpm and up. Now it will start building boost as low as 1400 rpm.

The big question is going to be the longevity of the Deacon product; It
cost me $75 with shipping. I figure if it last 3 years I’ll be happy.

Heading out for a short camping weekend on Saturday; up over several of the canyons that kicked my ass a few weeks ago. Should be able to really put it to the test and have a good comparison.

Glad to see it's working, I wonder, if you ever have to take it off how much of a pain that'll be...

Do they sell it in smaller amounts? 10.3 oz seems like gobs plenty, and a tube of that will very likely end up matching all of the rock hard left over silicone and construction adhesive tubes that I've got in the garage.

I could not find a smaller quantity; I used maybe 3.5 oz guessing by how far the gun pushed the end up the tube.

If someone is ready and willing to give this a try and keep us all updated on how it works out long term I’ll send what I have left over for just the shipping costs.

The more data we can gather collectively the better. I would like to use a little bit more for an experiment; fuse two pieces of pipe together and heat cure it a few times, then see how difficult it is to get apart and clean up.

Nice find and hopefully fix.
Looking forward to reading how it did in the canyons.

Great idea on the vacuum bagging! The package says good for one year if kept refrigerated.

Update from our trip this weekend:

Had a great time soaking in the hot springs and hanging out with the best people.

Truck ran phenomenal! Now the best running IDI that I have driven. Amazing what a difference sealing the up-pipe has made to the low end torque.

This was not quite an apples to apples comparison to the prior trip; I didn’t take the trailer, so not as heavily loaded. Also the valley temperatures were 75 instead of 101F.

From a dead stop at the bottom of Sardine Canyon I was able to actually accelerate to 65 up the canyon and held that to the mid point; there was some slower traffic so I hammered down in the left lane and hit the steep part going a bit over 70 before moving back over and getting stuck behind a Toyota pickup in the right lane; when traffic cleared I was actually able to get around him and was going 73 up the last steep pull to the pass!!

I never would have thought this old truck could do that with a loaded camper on it. It definitely wasn’t doing it before the pipes were sealed. My bigger 2.0 water intercooler also helped. EGT never went over 1150 up the canyon.

One of the biggest changes is the smoke on acceleration; Previously I had to be careful how fast I hammered down. Now the boost comes in so fast that I really can’t get it smoke no matter how hard I accelerate. Pump is turned up quite a bit.

Cruising on the highway at 75mph the boost is between 1-2psi and EGTs run 660-800F. It’s much nicer to drive.

So far, so good. I’ll update this thread if the Deacon seal blows out or shows any signs of trouble.

I researched this product for a project at work some time ago but never pulled the trigger on using it for that particular application. But I did wonder if it would work for exhaust seals, since it was designed for steam flanges. I have an ATS 093 setup that has the same problem so it's in storage for now. I originally was going to rebuild the slip coupling but this looks too easy to not attempt. For that matter, I would also use this on the taper connections at the exhaust manifolds. Heck, might even try it on the exhaust manifolds, if it can be applied thin enough.

Thanks for sharing. Think I'll order some for myself now.

Well bad news guys.

We took the truck out last weekend and it did really well. Highest pass we went over was 10,750 ft asl. Boost was still good.

I crawled under the truck today to look at the seal and it is leaking again.

Me too man. Me too.

Good news is that it doesn’t make pulling it apart a pain. Y-Pipe dropped right out with a little twist.

Time to get serious with the up-pipe and the down-pipe!

This is ridiculous:

Pinched off.

Bummer.

I imagine the loose gap, thermal expansion, and pressure was just too much. There are a host of other products you can try, like loctite mr2000, but unfortunately they're all expensive and would likely not fair any better.

One of the more hillbilly things I thought of doing was using aluminum foil. Fold it in half a few times to gain some thickness, coat it with the deacon product, and then shove it in the bell followed by inserting the up pipe. Might gain enough thickness to give the deacon a chance at holding.

Might all be a waste too. I figured aluminum foil would be cheaper then copper, and everyone likely has a roll of it somewhere.
