almost 20 years later, I couldnt agree more.

But, thats what "hot rodding" is.......whether it is a car, a chainsaw, a lawnmower, or even just reloads for the old hunting rifle......

And in defense of my younger/dumber? self, it would have taken one hell of a 460 to keep up with that truck.....trailer or not.
I understand, I'm just too dang practical.
I do got a couple bad to the bone chainsaws though. Stihl 044, and a Poulan from the early 80s that's 85cc and equiped with a bow bar, it's like holding a dirt bike in your hands.
The 86 bronco I scored a while back has a bored and stroked 302(347). I wouldn't have built such a thing but since it was in there when it got here, I'll enjoy it.
So, I understand the "hot rod" bug I'm just too practical.

Since I'm so good at responding to all my posts I'll give you guys a little update, the governor spring works great allowing it to rev right out without fuel cut (also I have my fuel turned up) so it's pretty fun. Surprisingly the push rods and valve train seems to be working together as I never really rev it over 3900. I'm no longer having issues with the engine running weird as the bent push rod was because of bad timing.

I did find the limits of the stock clutch though , it pulls really hard but as soon as you put it in fourth it'll spin the clutch. Fun times for a young buck like me.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I made the same modification to my pump and found I was able to have full fuelling up to 3800 RPM. Previously I would begin defueling around 2800 and be in complete fuel cut by 3000. I also noticed better performance in all RPM ranges. I would have tried to answer your original question, but it has been so long since I did the Modification I would have been of no help. It's too bad others were not much help either.

Bad timing, as in pump timing? Yeah, no, your pushrod didn't bend because of that............

Valve timing, absolutely possible. As others have said, valve to piston clearance in an idi is very small. There's really no room for error on that IMO.

If you decide to proceed, do so with caution, as valve float with hydraulic lifters can show up as bent pushrods in the beginning. You might ruin a rocker or two as well. It's when the head snaps off the valve, and breaks the piston that things turn problematic.

I'd recommend upgrading the springs before you get too far ahead. Someone recommend powerstroke springs, I'd recommend comp 910s, shimmed to the proper height of course.

For the most part it's worked out lol, don't worry about not answering my original question as I managed to bug one of my friends working at a diesel shop to just double check.
Just because it's an idi doesn't mean it can't be fun, enough fun to make you feel it in the butt Dyno and destroy the clutch in the process, time to make a new post about how I should remove my transmission lol
