And at least the corp auto parts stores honor lifetime warranties with little fuss, even after 5+ years, as long as you can prove you bought it, either with their purchase history database (phone number, name, location, and month/year of purchase) or with a physical receipt.
Yeah, I've swapped a few. Several years before my dad died he had a receipt from AutoZone printed up that showed all his lifetime parts for his 82 f100, he could basically walk in the store and swap anything.

Thats why they give a lifetime warranty, cause you'll be needing it. Starters and alternators go to my rebuilder. They last a lot longer then the corp stores

So, before I drive off on the tow truck there's a couple things that I want new before I just "trust" them,
That may have been good thinking in the old days, but after you keep doing this and still finding yourself stuck along the road, you will begin to realize "new" means nothing in this day and age. Most new parts you buy now are pretty lousy and just thrown together cheap junk. If you have a original part on your truck and it's still working, keep it, cherish it, and don't throw it away unless absolutely necessary.

To be fair the only time I've had to warranty out a starter is because I've abused it, usually in fuel priming scenarios. Is nice to have.
That's been my experience. The one that's on there now is sluggish..... probably been abused.

I've owned piles of idis and only ever had one with a direct drive starter and man it was a toilet turned over so slow even with new batteries and bigger cables. I ripped it out tossed it in the scrap barrel and put a Mitsubishi starter in and its been mint. I don't believe anyone still makes a direct drive starter regardless if it says it is who ever types up the product description doesn't know what they are talking about. The cast iron starter I had had a cast iron nose cone and it looked like a 1950's farm tractor starter. I like direct drive starters on semi trucks over reduction because they are massive and you usually have 3+ batteries and dual 00 cables

Not sure what semis you're working on, all I've seen have a single 1/0 going from battery to starter. However most of the time they are direct drive with 3-6 batteries. Seldomly are there just two, usually on lower displacement engines.

I didn't realize it at the time, but its a gear reduction starter that uses planetary gears. So it just looks like it's straight on.
