my earlier post i edited as i was able to disable the fuel inj.. pulled fuse.
the 96 i picked up someone had used autolites and we all know where this is going.. i have drivers side #4cylinder the GP plug is out but the very bottom hollow part of the GP is still in, these things must have been burned literally almost in to.. They came out with no effort and no sticking, i tried turning the motor over to see if it would blow out but no dice, i sprayed PB blaster to soak it, does one need to run the motor or just crank it over?
Worst case it goes to a shop as it needs 4gear synchro repair anyways.. this is what one gets for wanting to do their own work i guess... i am guessing the last time this was done the owner had them put the autolites in .

can I install one of the old glow plugs and at least get it to a shop this way??.. also when i removed the drivers side valve cover the metal bracket that's on the valve cover at rear was not there, the cover was not leaking, dry as could be.. whoever was under the hood last needs to not work in a garage, the old valve covers had been dated with a sharpie so..

Correct way would be to remove the head an extract.

Gambling way would be to soak the GP remains with the lubricant of choice, fire the engine up with the valve cover removed and hope the compression blows it out.

aside from the shear weight of the PSD head, it's probably the easiest "modern"diesel to R/R the head gasket. I'm sure a competent shop will get it done.

If you're going to preventatively replace parts, then by all means use OEM ! Sometimes the replacement can be worse than what's there, especially if it's not installed correctly !

I personally wouldn't touch the other head, or cups, or whatever else besides what is actually needed to get back on the road.

"fix until broke" is not my motto

i am going to have all cups replaced just as a preventive measure of course that does not mean one could not get a defective cup either..
the tranny needs help as well, that Zf5 4gear Synchro is acting up and im sure it will need a 4gear replacement as well.. when i get it back i wanna be able to safely jump in and go wherever without fear lol... easier said than done i know esp. on a diesel never know when something will wanna go belly up.

try pennzoil synchromesh in the transmission prior to condemning the 4th gear synchro

Is that an additive? reason being this truck has to be took in to a garage because of the dadgum glow plug hollow part stuck in the head..
Thanks greensKeeper

Fill through the shifter easier than filling through the side of the case?
I think so. Pull the shifter and then you just dump the fluid in, instead of having to find a way to pump it into the fill port on the side of the case. Some even put an extra quart in there for good measure (I don't).

Yeah i was mildly sarcastic in that reply lol, because i cant imagine why anyone does it this way when it takes ONE fitting on the side of the case vs 20 and a seal that has to be redone

Also, alot of oil manufacturers make bag quarts of oil for easy rear-end/transmission fills, and once you use a bag oil, everything else is terrible lol
