Been gathering components for a turbo and ZF5 install on my 84’ 6.9 and every time I turn around, I’ve forgotten another important part/system. This time it’s the CDR.

I got a complete ATS093 style turbo setup, but no turbo valve covers. I haven’t found any listing for valve covers that weren’t expensive. Plus, my IDI’s VCs have been sautéing in oil and gravel dust for the past 38 years and have leak proofed themselves, and I hate doing valve covers. Seeing that I’d rather not go that route, what are other exit points to siphon out crankcase pressure? I saw some form of collared spacer that bolts between the timing cover and fill spout, but there seems to be some concerns of the timing gears spitting out too much oil.

I have one of those adapters for the timing cover with the hose, it's for a banks turbo kit, and as far as I know it worked just fine.

I recently installed a 093 and I used CDD's valve covers with a welded bung that threads over to a oil catch can.

I made my own unconventional installation - first I welded up a modified IP cover to accept a hose, second I replaced the vacuum pump with an electric making room to install the CDR where it was. I will reply with pics.

This might not be as applicable to yours (v-belt) but might give you some ideas.

I would try and use the original CDR valve in your new system, or some sort of oil separation apparatus to keep down the amount of oil being sucked into the intake. See if you can make the piping go uphill from the entry point into the engine so the oil has a tendency to drain back after the engine is off.

This is a problem even Ford had to deal with. I keep having the boots blow off on my work truck, a 2009 power stroke. Part of the reason is the oil evacuation system and all that oil runs through the intercooler piping, and attacks the original rubber boots.

I dont use the cdr at all. buy the banks timing cover adapter from russrepair.com plumb a 1'' hose into the intake of the turbo and be done. or you can plumb the 1'' hose to a catch can, or down the frame rail, but your truck will look like its on fire when its running from the smoke vapor coming out.

Just made this one yesterday for a 7.3/zf5 that I’m turboing.

You are taking the fumes from both Valve Covers and the Timing/Gear cover, then where are you sending it to?

I just bolted mine to the ram air intake pipe going to the turbo inlet. Bearing gets some extra lube and the engine gets more fuel! Joking aside, I have a 4 inch steel tube going to the intake, then a piece of aluminum i cut at 45s to make a 90 bend into an ATS intake snail I bought here. The turbo is a non-wastegate banks setup. I eventually want to add an intercooler but it'll probably never happen!

I've heard of guys making a catch can, a tube full of steel wool to catch the oil vapors and gravity drip it back into the crank, while allowing blowby out. But I've never seen it in person, and there isn't a ton of space above the crankcase CDR port for that gravity separation. Some people just dump the cdr into a catch can and manually re-add, etc. I prefer doing it how it was done by Banks, and the factory as far as I know, into the intake.
