I've been running a 7lb cap for about the last 3-4 months and have had zero issues with temps. I have an Auber Instruments digital gauge using their temp probe and notice my temps are maybe a few degrees higher but negligible if at all. I don't tow heavy uphill in 100 degree plus weather so YMMV, but I feel that taking some strain off the cooling system can only be a net positive. This was recommended to me a while back by the late Towcat.

This is something I have done on all of my vehicles for the last 15 or so years. Havent had one boil over, even with really high coolant temps. Seems to be easier on radiators.....

It won't affect the temperature. It affects the boil over point. 7lbs should be enough for any situation, but be more risky at higher elevations.

What you will notice is the level in your overflow tank varies a lot more than with a higher pound cap. The overflow tank will be more full after a hot shut down. If it pukes out of the overflow tank, let it and let it find it's level. You might have to run the overflow tank lower when you are filling it when it's cool.

Thats if your plastic overflow tank has not already cracked and started leaking.:( They seem to be failing at this age.

Ford no longer makes the early style ones, could not find an OEM aftermarket one either, but eyeing the aluminum one Classic Diesel Designs sells.

I can say from experience with the one from CDD and I have a 13lb cap, I don't think that bottle dimensions is quite big enough, as it fills up completely, and drains completely as it cools off. I let the guys know that it should probably be a little bigger too, but overall I'm happy with it.

They don't make 3liter coke bottles any more either! A 2liter bottle isn't enough to handle our "industrial" engine's overflow.

Is there an advantage to running a lower pressure cap? My truck came with a 16lb cap, which I was thinking of replacing due to unknown age.

The theory is you are less likely to have cooling system leaks. Such as radiator, heater core, head gasket, water pump, oil cooler, and hoses. So often on aging vehicles people put lesser caps on. In theory a 7# cap is pushing out 45% less on all those items.

The flip side of the story is 13psi is not much pressure. Overheating is very problematic. And if your truck cannot handle 13psi, you could be masking an issue that bites you on a long trip or tow.

I would ditch the 16# cap for a 13#. Also get one with the red pressure release, you are fare less likely to burn yourself with that style cap if you need to open the radiator hot at a gas station or side of the road.

We’ll you’ve sold me. New 13lb cap with pressure release is only $4 on rockauto. I just tacked it onto an order I was already making.

As far as old and cracked overflow bottles go, mine was cracked badly down the middle seam on the bottom and I just slathered on a very, very thick layer of clear RTV, not sure which kind, and it has worked fine for over a year.

I have a #13 cap and it seems to be handling 100 degree weather just fine I will likely stay with that.
