I work on semis for a living, it's instinct at this point to just let it fall. It dented the oil filter and oil pan. I swapped them out and the engine is currently in my dad's truck, runs clean and strong. Little drop didn't phase it at all

when my truck was stock height i pulled hood bolts and rotated back and with a harbor freight picker could get over the core support with just the motor. when lifted i pulled the core support. I still think it is easier to seperate in the truck and build a plate to bolt to floor jack for tranny transfer case.

I always think when pulling engines on cars, if this lift piston fails while sliding it over the front, this engine is going to take out the front of this car.

Nero I am sure your heart sank as you saw it going over. Hopefully the wise part of you tried briefly to stop it, then realized your not Superman and let it go so as not to get hurt.
I feel like I'm having a mild heart attack when I have an engine up like that. My old school junkyard friend pointed out how he used to use his wrecker for pulling engines. It's one of the reasons I can't wait to get mine going, I'd use the bucket of my tractor but tractor hydraulics aren't super smooth and the dynamic of how the bucket and lift move is too funky for straight up movement, and windshields are expensive.

I might take a tranny out the front, but not transfer cace and tranny. Those definitely are coming out the bottom.

make sure to pull oil filter off to help clear the cross member especially if you have the 1995 filter

Plus most of the tractors I’ve worked with have an “auto lowering feature” (leaky hydraulics)

I have done it a couple ways. Both times with transmission separated, one time with hood off and other with hood on. IIRC, I never messed with the core support on either truck. I also pulled heads off the second engine before I pulled it out of the truck. Of course, it had the turbo off too. The first time the engine was so heavy and difficult pulling it up into the garage to rebuild, we let it down in the driveway and pulled the heads off in front of the garage door. My garage has a good lip making it difficult to roll the cherry picker into. It went much faster the on the second engine!

Like others have noted, these engines are NOT light! When you have it extended out on the 1/2 ton setting and the arm on my cherry picker is flexing a bit, you know it is maxed out.

Believe it or not, my '74 international doesn't leak down noticeably. It held a whole cow(@1000lbs) up all day just a few months ago.
The old Massey backhoe I had was the poster child for hydraulic leaks.....all the seals were shot, so the buckets would drop down pretty quick even while running at operating rpm. It would still lift 3k with ease though, and that little Perkins never quit. They don't make 'em like that anymore..

I had a Massey 165 with a loader, it's loader was good. But I've done so much to this international that it better not leak down!

Dry weight of an idi engine is about 920lbs, that's a lot of mass suspended in the air!

I'm an IH guy, always ran them, but still have a soft spot for a Massey. There good tractors. Mine was a 203, which was the industrial version of the 135.

Pull the core support... IF its not rusted out? You dont need to pull the hood unless you're going in from the top with a crane to pull the whole works..Try not to damage the support the turbo supports are tough to come by, if you have an N/A the support is different from the turbos. Remember.. these things are pigs.. 1200 pounds fully dressed.. they weigh more than a fully dressed 460 by 250-300 pounds.. that is JUST the engine.. so unless you have a crane and pull the hood? You are NOT pulling it married
