Running new motor oil vs waste motor oil?

Like many others I’ve been tempted to save on fuel costs by running a waste oil mix, but I’ve never done it because the carbon in it is bad for the fuel system. But now I found a shop closing down near me that’s selling 325 gallon bulk containers of clean, new Valvoline 5w-30 motor oil for $650 each ($2/gallon). So my question is this: would running the truck on a fuel mixture containing new motor oil avoid the pitfalls of waste oil? Are there still downsides that would shorten the life of my fuel system and/or engine?

What's a good ratio to mix in?
What do you have for a fuel pump? I run WMO @90%oil to @10% gas or diesel and I'm using the mechanical fuel pump. Some guys say the Holly Red will pump it that heavy. It's also 95 to 100F here so I can run it at almost 100% oil. But according to your fuel pump and outside temperature, I'd start at about 50/50 diesel and work it up to the "sweet spot" i.e. minimal hazing at idle, ease of cranking, etc. WARNING: once you do this, your brain will be "affected" or maybe "infected", you WILL begin to "think outside of the box". Please keep us posted, this is a rare find and a unique opportunity to experiment with.

Wow. I had no idea you guys were using that much. I assumed you were just supplementing your diesel use with 10%-20% oil. 90%? That's fantastic!
I don't think I want to get into used oil but I'll be keeping my eyes open for $2/gal. oil. ;-)

OP, congrats on your score.

Yeah you definitely came up on some cheap clean fuel. I think for flow reasons I'd probably thin it up a slight bit with maybe 10% diesel so the pumps don't have to work so hard to move it. It is 5W30 so it should move pretty easily in hot temps. Here is AZ were seeing 110 degrees. At those temps i don't think you'd need to do anything.

OK I’m going to go ahead and buy one. If anyone else is near Dayton Ohio and wants the info, shoot me a DM. They also have 75w90, and waste oil that you could probably get for free. I’ll start with 50/50 oil and diesel and go from there.

I'd buy 'em all if I was near there.
Although I don't know how my truck would feel about 2500# in the bed. ;-)

New oil will be a bit thicker than used, as most oil shears toward its W rating as it is used and VI modifiers are reduced. I run a Duralift and that has been fine with 90%WMO here over the last month or so. Heck, at $2 per gallon, I'd put away a year or two of oil changes as well (for my gas cars and equipment), as its a bigger cost savings over fresh motor oil on a $/Gallon scale. Nice score, if only Dayton was a little closer to me.

Good to know. I though 3/4 Ton was literal.
I rarely need to put anything heavier than a couple dirtbikes or plywood/lumber in there anyway.

On a side note, I once saw a Honda Ridgeline hauling 1 ton of wood heating pellets.
Steering that rig must have been interesting. ;-)

I carry a tank of water in my truck, every few weeks.

325 gallons.

That is 2697.5 pounds.

Truck drives like a dream. No problem whatever.

"Rides like a car, works like a truck" FORD, the better idea.
I like that :)
My older son said: F-O-R-D is the chemical formula for rust.

Here in Finland they also say FORD = Fix Or Repair Daily

I can confirm all 3 statements!

Nachschlag:
In Germany is a saying:
"Mit dem Ford fuhr er fort und mit dem Zug kam er wieder heim."
"He left with the Ford and returned home by train."

I need to confirm this as well - as it happened with my E350 too.
